OK, so that's three of us to eat our hats.

Mine's a sweaty old baseball cap, so not something I'd offer to eat if I thought there was much chance of being wrong...

You're much more patient than I am Beth...I've honestly come to believe there are some who just refuse to get it..

My hat is clean, but I wouldn't offer to eat a fish if I thought I was wrong, for sure...I hate fish.

Actually pretty good. You had me believing you were really fed up with giving Karen advice, until the explanation. There goes your subtlety

Karen, I know you are in pain. We are not making light of it, I promise you.

Beth you made me realise something today with your reply.

When my TMS (RSI) began I had been continually trying to understand what I was going to do with my life when I finished. For example take a graduate job or keep pushing to get a career as an artist. When it happened my first thought was what the hell can I do if I can't bloody use my hands! So I couldn't make any choice! It made me panic alot and I have only just realised I am still thinking like that. I couldn't do what I loved the most and its made me doubt the whole purpose of what I am doing! No my hands won't fall off!!!

Thanks Beth!

Karen take everyones advice, keep at it and don't let it stop you from painting. Stopping doing my work has probably added more rage than the original problems.

Think in the moment < that has to be the best advice I found on here.

Hey Karen,

How are you doing with applying the techniques that everyone has offered? Have you tried any of them? Are you giving them a fair shot?

If I were in your shoes, I would try to my best to give a fair shake to some of the techniques that people have mentioned here.

Then if you really gave it a fair shot and its not working, its time to get more support. Maybe a phone consult with a TMS doc (not sure if this is available or not), or contacting a TMS therapist, or using a different book like fred amir or monte hueftles or a phone consult with one of them ...the point is that you have to do something different, and you have to take some sort of action soon

I've been in situations where I felt stuck and felt like I was backsliding, and looking back I see that when I took some sort of action to help myself or get more support to help myself - thats when things started turning in the right direction. This thing obviously has a hold on you, and what you're doing isn't enough. Its time to get intense with this and use the techniques (what do you have to lose at this point?....from what you've typed it doesn't seem like the pain could get much worse), and get support.

Now that I know you have the book.....Did you notice how the case studies he mentions on page 95 (WHICH SARNO HAS CURED SINCE IT IS TMS (EMOTIONAL AND NOT STRUCTURAL)) sound similar to yours.
Your hands and wrist are not the problem or was it the problem of any of the cured patients in his book. They got better... so will you, but not by worrying about it. I would say start painting again today.

Ya got me there, Art.

So your subtlety did not go to waste, after all.

Karen, congrats on finding the time to read and quote Sarno. Now that you know you are not made of Paper mache, stop cancelling voice lessons and such. Find a quiet place and yell at your subconscious. Tell it to shut the f*** up with all this silly hand pain, and that you're not going to let anybody keep you from living your life, least of all a few repressed emotions. Scream at your unc to send oxygen to your hands. Believe me, you should be shaking when you've done. Don't hold back. Really YELL.

Lastly, the thing I did when I first started pushing my physical limits, was I said to the pain "My life is not worth living if I can't do what I want. Go ahead, give it your best shot, but you'll have to kill me to keep me from (driving, typing, running, etc)."

It's your life, Karen, TAKE IT BACK. All you have to do is decide to.

Regards,

Beth

thanx Mike and Beth..:)
Don't think i am ready to push thru this much pain and paint..In Dr. S's video he says to wait for most of the pain to go away b4 resuming activity..The yelling and my unc is a great idea, Beth..Gotta wait til i can get away for a bit from the pups to do that, they would get scared..They are as sensitive as me..:)

and..one of the reasons i am really having a hard time w/ this particular manifestation of TMS is that my fingers are even swelling after i do the slighest thing w/ my wrists/hands..there definitely is inflammation..

Ok, I'm starting to get frustrated now .

With the yelling, just go in the bathroom alone, close the door, and go at it.

Then, come out and call the doggie's over and coo at them and let them know everything is OK. Believe me, they read you well, and they are pretty freaked out about your current state.

Good luck,

Beth

i don't blame you for getting frustrated, Beth..I am frustrated with myself as well..i don't know why the heck i can't make all of this back slides stop..I just probably lost my PT job too, at the pilates studio..She cannot have an 'injured' person there..it's bad for business..

honestly, i am trying..I pushed myself to go to my part time job today, literally driving w/ my elbows! when i tried to use my wrists the pain just increased and went to some fingers so i adjusted..my boss there loves me but when i told her of my condition..(and my knee has previosly limited me there)she was kind but took me off the schedule indefinitely til i 'heal..' To her it looks like a real injury..She doesn't know about tms..I am going to watch the Sarno videos today..

Karen, take some painkillers. You are in such a state you probably are having a hard time doing the work. Take some painkillers and then stop giving up on doing things because of the pain. Get out and do stuff. Write. Type. Walk. Drive. I honestly don't think you have the luxury of being one of those people who can wait until the pain goes away to start pushing back. If you stay like this you will never get to that point because every episode of pain panics you and reinforces the cycle. The pain has you too well conditioned. You need to do something drastic.

Push back on it now. I didn't get anywhere with TMS until I took charge and decided what I was going to do. Challenge the pain and challenge what it's trying to make you do. Don't cooperate. It is past time for you to assert yourself in your relationship with your unconscious mind.

Seriously. Don't make us eat live fish here. You can do it.

Really, seriously, don't make us eat live fish in our hats. That's not quite sushi

I agree with ACL, take some pain killers.

Don't EVER, EVER, EVER, admit to an employer you are injured or ever have been in ANY way. After I lost my first job to RSI, I never brought it up again, and it SO reinforced my health at work it's not even funny. As I pretended to be well, I was well. Now, that's not all it took, but I NEVER had to face the fear of an employer taking me off the schedule until I "heal". With TMS?? Come on!!

I'm just saying, in the future, don't ever tell them, even about your knee which you think is still injured (and nobody on this board does.)

Keep that stuff to yourself, and stay in control. You can always be out with an acute injury, that way you will be in control.

I'm with ACL. It's time to look inside for the courage, and challenge the pain. Look, life isn't worth living under these conditions of fear and dread, so Challenge the Pain, even if it kills you. It won't kill you.

You're stronger than you think you are. What's more, you are as strong as we are.

Beth
