I'm a TMS veteran who's been battling an ankle issue for the last few months. I've lost some of my range of motion and when I run or play hoops I get significant pain. Visited with an ankle doc who showed me some bone spurs and arthritis in the joint that he said is causing the loss of range of motion. He's talking doing PT and possible surgery down the road. On the TMS side my world is a mess of work and marriage issues which have been just terrible and haven't let up. I've been working on my TMS, lots of journal work and trying to find quiet time to reflect.
If it wasn't for the loss of range of motion, I wouldn't be so freaked out by this situation. but it's got me running scared.
Would like to hear from anyone with similar issues. Thanks! |

Hey Lou, I just recovered from a broken and badly sprained ankle. I did PT for 2 months but never continued w/ the at home exercises. I have loss of range of motion in both ankles and never had an MRI so for all I know I might have bone spurs as well..I can relate to you, big time on all counts including relationship/life issues.
I can only speak for myself but I try to avoid ever considering surgery unless it is something life threatening. Surgery will just bring on scar tissue which could fix one thing and hurt another bringing on an entire new set of pain issues..
I should be journaling too..That is great that you are doing that..keep it up..very healing!
Sarno talks about MRI's/Xrays not always reflecting what is really going on..What I mean is, your Xray could look Terrible but you could be pain free..Keep asking your brain to cut the crap and go inside, reflect and relax.. Hugs, K |

Lou: You're getting to the age where hoops is a spectator sport. Don't fight it: it will only add to your other stress. As a former hoopster I suggest bicycling. It is much easier on your joints while being a great way to stay in shape. |

I'm not clear on why you would want "range of motion" in the ankles? I think you'd want stability in that area. For mild sprains I use Coban bandages to stabilize it and for severe ones trainer's tape to immobilize it. My first and worst sprained ankle took a year for me to not be able to remember which side it was on. Since then, numerous sprains later, it only takes a couple of weeks of RICE and taping to get over it. Sprains can cause ligaments to be looser, breaks heal stronger. All and all, my ankles feel great and I don't give them a thought after numerous marathons, sprains and tournament tennis. Yours will heal too unless you had something like a compound fracture with bones sticking out of your skin. Sarno says surgery is our best PLACEBO and you get all those great RX pain killers and then pre and post-op PT. Your ankle doc may be looking to supplement his income to buy that new Jaguar F type in the commercials.
For a real blood and guts injury, with swelling and ecomosis, give it a reasonable amount of time to heal and if the pain lingers treat it as TMS. So that was the physical explanation, you know the TMS drill, before you pursue invasive procedures like surgery or voo-doo, think TMS'ly.
G'luck, tt

The range of motion loss is that when i flex forward the ankle "stops" and I cant push or drive off it and it causes pain and I have some swelling. I had a bone chip removed 20 yrs ago that happened during a bad sprain and that's what the doc says is why the spurs and arthritis are present. I've been hitting the pool and changing stuff up as I don't want any more surgeries. Would love to TMS may say out of this one
I love hoops been playing for over 30 years (just turned 43) - maybe it's time for halfcourt only |

I disagree about anyone getting to old to play hoops..I am over 40 and I still play and probably always will! :) |

I have similar condition currently with knee. Tear in meniscus that doc said is unrepairable. I can't run which is ok but I can't officiate basketball at high school level at this moment and thta's not ok.. This one is tricky because I use TMS method for back problems but this has a structural basis. How do you tell your self "self, its not a meniscus tear and arthritis its just TMS." |

Hi Lou, I empathise as I'm dealing with the recurrence of a decade old achilles 'injury'. It's the reason I stopped dancing and at the time was so bad I wondered if I would ever walk again. Fast forward to today and the ole demon is up to it's same old. Stay with me...
Phillyjoe, you raise an excellent point. What do you do when something bears the hallmarks of a real problem? I've given this some thought and this is today's weather report. Like Ace1, I tend to believe everything is emotionally/psychologically based. At some very deep level of the nervous system, all our perceptions are rendered physical.
However, with all due respect to classical tms theory, I think when it comes to sport and such, hedging is a wise move. Whatever your game, no one who uses their body shuns warm-ups or cool downs, we don't eat junk, RICE when needed, massage, hot tubs, whathaveyou.
So while I have my eye on my psychological ball, I am also being very gentle and mindful. Gung-ho is for later. I'll wear high heels and walk with carte blanche but I won't train like that.
Lou, aside from this I have bone spurs in my neck and I never give them the time of day. Regarding your ankle, I'd advocate the middle ground. I'm doing the tms work and I'm massaging in the knitbone (comfrey). I'll accept a placebo in this instance.
Oh, and I second the who gives a fig about your age. I'm 41 and am delighted to still be on this wonderful planet. Life is not a spectator sport. |

Google "Failed Knee surgery" recent studies show surgery is not the cure for knees that it was once thought to be--what does that leave? |

Thanks for all the input - for now I'm hitting the pool and doing the TMS work. Hoping some more rest and regrouping mentally will have a positive effect on the whole situation. Especially if I can get rid of the swelling and stop focusing on the injury. |
