So its been 9 years since a really bad Back attack. Doing all the TMS work, reading this forum to keep up to date, took up biking at 57 and preparing for a 375 mile 4 day trip. Feeling really good. On my knees putting air in tire, WHACK, back spasm. I'm doing the mind work, even got on bike that afternoon just to ride and did fine, getting off was nearly impossibe. I am telling myself this is not going to stop me. Point is, same spot I get hit. Lower back, like a shot right across. I have as much stress and other life stuff as regular person but using my TMS work along with my personal spiritul convictions to counter all TMS stuff, so I get confused after a 9 year no major pain period, I get attack just putting air in bike tire. Would appreciare feedback. Thanks. |

Philly iam getting major attacks after 6 years.
Had many equivalents during but could deal with them. I guess because I didn't notice them as Tms at the time that it just hit me.
I tell all the back pain sufferers it should be easier for you guys because sarno talks more about that then groin pain haha.
You should relax because back pain is the norm and many people talk about it and have been cured
**Sure I can lay down on a bed of nails and not have pain but why am I having back pain when laying down on a soft mattress? |

Let me go out on a limb here, I'm not a doctor, only a tennis player, and you can't dx medical conditions over the internet--but, I'm almost positive it's TMS. You can't hurt your back putting air in your tires. You could hurt your back maybe falling off the roof of your garage, but not putting air in your tires. It could be the subconscious stress of your imminent bike ride, topping over your reservoir of rage. Have a glass of wine and some pain-killers and curl up with a TMS book and ride it out.

I just wanted to flag that it can be dangerous to ingest alcohol with some types of pain killers. |

Hi Joe, I can relate..I believe too that it can be TMS..I like the reminder Tom gave about how falling off a roof can cause a real injury, typically not putting air in one's tires..We sometimes think of our bodies as so fragile..I do it all the time..Like I am made of glass or something..There is another point I wanted to bring up and that Dr. Sarno talks about other unconscious stressors that we aren't aware of like fear of aging, family stress, etc..I know I have the fear of aging thing, big time..and I am around your age! Just food for thought. The number means nothing when you don't look or feel your age, but still..some of us feel fear about getting older.. Good luck on your bike trip! You'll do great! ~K |

Karen, that's a good insight! Every time you come back here with a relapse you have a better understanding of this TMS stuff. It is a life-long game with your subconscious that you can get better at if you follow Dr. Sarno's rules and practice them--practice makes perfect--or close enough for government work. |

Philly, If this had happened to me (and it has), and I had called Dr. Sarno about it, I can hear his answer now: "Matthew , you have more work to do". For me that means more yoga, more meditation, more exercise, more sleep, possibly more counseling.
For you, that means, what ever got you better to begin with, do more of it,,,,,, for the rest of your life.
Remember the diet analogy:
You need to make life changes that are positive and will be with you for the rest of your life because you practice them all the time. It is like a diet. You can go on a diet and lose weight or you can change your eating habits. When you diet and then you go back to eating the way you did before the diet, you just gain the weight back. I see that you have to have a new way of "eating" all the time, so when the weight is gone, you are still "eating" the same way. Your habits have changed and the weight stays gone. Substitute "pain" for "weight" in the above and that is the approach I take.
Does that mean I never have a relapse, no, but they become more and more infrequent as time goes on.
What is the message YOU are getting from this pain?

Philly- I'm having a major relapse after about 10 years and finally figured out that the nausea I've been having for the past two month is TMS! So, you're not alone in the boat of relapses.
I've pulled out all of my favorite books and have started re-reading and journaling etc. now that the light bulb went on and I realized it's not physical at all.
Just yesterday I was thinking that I'd forgotten to do the TMS Maintenance that I'd been doing for a long time and need to go back to it. Kind of like checking the oil in the auto...
