I think that one of the things which makes people stuck is that, as strange as it may sound, there is a part of them that does not want to get well-- call it the unconscious if you will. Why would someone who is in deep, agonizing pain not want to get well and free themselves of their affliction? As I see it there are two main reasons: 1) They extract benefit of some kind by remaining ill, ie being taken care of, support group is the person's social life, or not having to face life. 2) If they get well they will have to make some real changes in their lives which they find scary.
SteveO writes about this topic in his book.

I don't know where this came from Shawn, but so true. A couple of weeks ago I did have a symptom free day and it felt like I didn't know what to do with myself. Half of the onion has been peeled in my case, time to peel the rest. |

I guess human are creatures of habit, of routine, of familiar environment. We just don't like changes. We hate to live our "zone" for good or bad. This is why some people stay in an abusive relationship, why people keep smoking or doing drug or doing many other bad behaviors that they know is bad or illegal.
Until one day the light hit them and their wisdom awaken and they snap out of those destructive "zones".
