My situation
chronic shin splints including swelling and pain (3 months) after 1 year middle distance running with no issues
MRI scan indicating stress fracture swelling on shin
lumbar back pain on and off for 5 years
a low-humming tinnitus type thing for a couple of years usually at night before sleep
Recently I have started using a cross trainer because I have been advised not to run for a couple of months After 1st 20 minure session I had sever calf pain in both calfs for 3 days After 2nd 20 minute session a week later I had severe big tow swelling and joint pain for 3 or 4 days and took anti-inflam currently not too bad I have not noticed any shin or back pain since I got my toe pain
The second thing I recently started doing is reading Sarno's Mindbody Prescription. Although I have been reading him for years - this is the first time I really started to feel convinced my back pain and maybe other issues are TMS.
I have plenty of stress in my life and the stories at the beginning really made me realise that. Before I was of the opinion that I had stress but because I have known about TMS for years then that should be enough.
I have 3 puzzles:
1. Sarno says most TMS cases have tenderness either on the buttocks or sholder - neither of which I have. 2. Sarno says most TMS sufferers are perfectionists. I am not by my estimation - but I do need approval and want to be liked 3. Other than the mention on page 99 about swelling - is there is not much mention of swelling.
What I am surprised by is that the symptoms I have in the last two weeks are severe yet all I did was two sessions on a low-impact cross trainer.
Any comments would be appreciated

airbulb first -welcome my friend
how long have you givin yourself time to heal,we might be working against the grain -maybe not
im not a dr ,so i have to advice to seek council from a licensed tms dr.its hard for some of us to get the money or travel to see a tms doc-its a great thing to do,although i didnt and i got healed
the three puzzles- 1)i had severe lower back pain and so many other issues but i didnt have tenderness/but i had tms/there r a lot of people that dont have the tenderness-i think were lucky without the tenderness
2)were not perfectionest but we have traits like perfectionest were goodist -type t personality-steveo from this site has his own post and book -the great pain deception-when you get on a roll -you might want to check him out.(the needing approval and wanting to be liked-this is traits of a goodist)
3)the swelling-ok we have to be patient ,get all the advice from the forum, steveo can help alot here /make sure you do the mental work-this heals the physical-
i know if your an exercise fanatic like me then this might be hard to swallow -(to take it easy) -how long have you been resting-and yes if you look their are a lot of topics about swelling here-im going to let others collaborate on this issue-just keep believing and keep learning-oh and in the past i could ride ellipticals or bikes for hours and not get sore-but after the tms came along i could ride 10 mins and hurt for days....
this is great advice you had for a poster - my understanding is that you don;t really need to fully understand the reasons - just acknowledge your repressed emotions and do the exercises every day and you will see an improvement.
get back into the studies with all your heart.... |

Airbulb, I cede the detailled answering of your three puzzles to the experts. Don't know the exact page in SteveO's book, but he wrote about perfectionistic people who - by their estimation - were not perfectionists! Very interesting!
And due to swelling: I had a short look in the new TMS book via "search inside" on Amazon (the hidden psychology of pain) and SteveO writes about swelling, too.
Some quote out of the search inside: "[..]Various biological pathways are required to create physical changes resulting in pain and swelling, but the process begins with emotional distress at a very deep level and our mind/brain's efforts to keep this from our conscious awareness" (James Alexander, p. 95)
And:
"It is even reported that simply imagining an offending movement can cause inflammatory swelling for some sufferers." (p.378).
By the way, I had so called shin splints for a few weeks. The pain was so severe and the muscles in my calfs so weak that I permanently twisted my ankles because the muscles didn't want to do what I told them! I wasn't able to drive my car because every shin and calf muscle was so painful, really unbelievable. Oh, and it came from...nothing! Went away and know I have- addictionally to my other TMS-symptoms - severe shoulder pain, it doens't get boring, ha ha.
And I permanently experience what you experienced with your cross trainer: severe symptoms from minimal exercice! I always remember one sentence in SteveO's book: "TMS doesn't want you to move". For me, that's so true!
Kind regards from Germany sends Birdie |

Airbulb: How old are you? Are you in training for the Olympics? If the MRI indicates a fracture and swelling then give it a rest! If your big toe is swollen ask your physician to assay your uric acid level: gout is not something you can ignore for long. Sarno inaugurated a discipline that is evolving as is evident in this forum. Don’t get hung up on details such as the lack of shoulder pain or tenderness in your buttocks. If you have chronic back pain you probably have TMS. You should be more concerned with what is driving your obsessive exercising. Think psychological.
