This is a question I've wanted to ask of all but have been afraid. I have some weird soreness/sharp pains in my low back and across the top of my buttocks. When Ipalpate the area, it does not hurt - it almost feels like a nerve thing. It also feels tight. Is this TMS? Pleae, anybody who has had this weird kind of pain, please let me know. I'm really working out hard these days, but boy, can that @*#p ain be annoying!!!

Remembering that no one here can make a diagnosis for you, the best advice anyone here can give you is make sure you don't have anything medically serious (such as tumors/cancer) by going to a doctor and having it checked out. If they tell you anything such as a slipped disc, herniated disc, degenerating disc, pinched nerve, piriformis syndrome, or any other trendy name for chronic pain, it's likely TMS.

Since I don't know you and I'm curious...have you read any of Dr. Sarno's books? Do you have access to a doctor who can specifically diagnose TMS for you?

My pain (12 years of it) has been in my low back, buttocks and legs. I know the "tight" feeling you're describing...as it's one of the lingering sensations I'm waiting to have fade away.

If you have already had anything serious ruled out and you have good reason to believe it's TMS, then stop wondering if it's TMS and stop worrying about any possible physical causes. TMS IS a nerve thing...in that nerves are some of the targets of TMS. So are muscles...so are tendons...and in the case of TMS equivalents...so are any number of systems in the body. If a nerve or muscle is being slightly oxygen deprived, it's going to hurt, but a nerve that is truly damaged or severely pinched will eventually just go numb...and it will happen pretty quick; it won't continue to hurt.

Yes - that pain can be annoying...and it can be distracting...and it can be easy to slip back into fearing it. Don't. Don't let it bother you any more than you absolutely have to (maybe use it as a reason to yell at your brain). Don't let it distract you from what you love to do or from the emotions lying underneath. Don't fear it and don't doubt the cause. To give in to any of these things is to give TMS the fuel it needs to keep going.

This is how it goes for me. Do a run, say 6-8 miles, feel better and better as I go (pain slowly fades). Then 3 to 4 hours later _ get this sharp, catching pain which seems to come from my low back or buttock. It almost feels like something is moving aoundin there, but MRI only showed DDD. I just left a very stressful job in the last few months and have now been learning a new job that I like. So I guess I am surprised that this pain is still coming and going. Yes, I read HBP and SteveO's book. I also just ordered the DVDs, hoping the visual aid will help me...
