Hi everyone,

I came across this study last night as I was doing research for the website. I thought it was especially relevant for all of us in the TMS community. The researchers discovered that mental distractions - thoughts! - decreased pain signals BEFORE they reached the brain. Here are the details:

http://www.thehealthymind.com/2012/05/18/distraction-plays-a-critical-role-in-pain-relief-study/

Our thoughts are so critically important as it relates to our health - emotional AND physical. Science is only now beginning to understand how this happens.

Never doubt how truly powerful you are!!

Dr Z, i have a question. Do you think that tingling/burning/muscle twitches and LPR or GERD symptoms also fall into this realm? My symptoms literally jump from tingling in my arms, to legs, to back ache, to reflux, to muscle twitching, all sometimes within one day. I know you say pain, but is it more broad than just a muscle ache?

Thank you.

Timmbell,

I especially think about TMS in any individual who has any set of symptoms that tend to migrate in a way that is counter to typical physiology. I have many patients who experience a constellation of symptoms similar to yours. The symptoms include pain, but they are certainly not exclusive to pain (burning sensations, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, to name a few).

Often times, it is this migratory and anatomically-inconsistent pattern of physical discomfort (not necessarily pain) that clues you in to the presence of TMS.

I hope that helps.

Keep moving forward and never doubt your strength!!

Kindly,
Dr. Z

Step by step, every little bit of awareness helps. Hopefully we start enough "brushfires" in the minds of others that they begin to see how important a role our emotions play in physical symptoms.

Step by step!!

But what do you say when the pain does not move at all and is firmly rooted in the buttocks, left thigh, pain radiating down the left leg coupled with constant pins and needles in both feet, if only it would move I would shout with joy and be TMS convinced. Ophelia

Ophelia,

I know it is hard when you are feeling so badly, but TMS tries to get you to focus on where you hurt and how bad it is. As others have said here, the less you are focused on the how and why of the pain, the quicker the pain of TMS can resolve.

You are doing an amazing job. Never doubt your strength.
