I think being susceptible to suggestion is likely to be a TMS’er type trait and therefore whatever we surround ourselves with is likely to determine how we feel and act to a great extent. I have noticed that whenever I watch a gritty realistic type TV show or movie that depicts suffering or whatever this can actually make me feel somewhat anxious or depressed and further reading newspapers with constant medical references and listening to the news which seems intent on propagating fear all make me feel pretty down or slightly anxious. It is almost as if the world wants to generate a slightly uneasy underlying atmosphere of fear and anxiety.
I think it is Eckhart Tolle who talks about the concept of the pain body and I’m quite intrigued about how this concept fits in with TMS. As a person I’m aware that I am extremely susceptible to suggestion, peer pressure and the like and am conscious that I modify my opinions and personality to fit in with my current surroundings. I suppose I’m just wondering as to how much all these often negative outside influences do actually influence our thoughts and psyche and how we ultimately deal with this and if it could actually lead to internal conflict, misery and TMS.
I know the tabula rasa idea that Locke put forward was mainly about our formative years but I’m sure the reality is that certain things can find us as a blank slate and if we allow these things to effect us on whatever level then this can pose problems and difficulties for us. Yes, I know it’s a tough world out there and it’s impossible to surround ourselves with flowers, sweetness and light all day long but is it possible that a personality susceptible to persuasion and influence coupled with living in a society that thrives on sound bites, sensationalism and conflict could be making us emotionally and physically unwell?
