Does anyone have any experience with using a sound machine at night to help with sleeping peacefully? I have no problem going to sleep but I find that my pain symptoms are at their worst when I wake up. I reassure myself that there's nothing physically wrong with me and all of the other ways to treat TMS. Within an hour or two, I'm usually feeling pretty normal. So, I'm assuming I am thinking about things subconsciously while I sleep. If so, would one of those sound machines that produce relaxing sounds (crickets chirping, ocean waves rolling in, etc) help at all? I've heard that they help people with tinnitus. Is that because of the sound aspect or because of the soothing, calming aspect?

That's a very interesting observation, tmsjptc. I have exactly the same daily fluctuation of symptoms from, worst out of bed, improving after an hour or so; late night is almost always the best. I have wondered the same thing about things churning within the unconscious while asleep. There really might be something to that because, though I sleep well, I usually feel stiff, depressed, tired, anxious, when I first get up.

wrldtrv, I didn't get much response (except you and lara), but I think there could be something to this as well. By the way, my nights (while still awake) are the best too. I will plan to get one of these machines sometime soon and then will post back if I learn anything from using it.

tmsjptc when you dream do you remember what you dream of? Dreams are "insight into the unconcious". You may be working out emotional stuff in your dreams, since your symptoms are more pronounced in the morning. So it might not be all bad.

You can Google Alpha wave music and find lots of the music, like what you are suggesting, that is supposed to promote Alpha and Theata brain waves, the waves that the brain produces when we are most relaxed. Most of the music is like what you'd hear while getting acupuncture or a massage. I'd think any music that is associated with getting a massage should help! May help to listen in the AM to ease yourself up.

I turn a floor fan on night at night, without it blowing on me, except when it is really hot. When I'm having trouble drifting off I focus on the sound of the fan, trying to imagine/hear just one of the blades turning...and zzzzzz.

The "white noise" is helpful, especially in the morning when the birds are chirping. (I know, you are supposed to like the little critters, but they can be noisy, even at three or four in the morning.)

Anxiety is often worse in the morning because of the fear of the day.

Dreams to me seem to be way of insight, and do not cause anxiety for me, but help to resolve problems.

Our 5 senses (hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, touching) effect how we think and feel most of the time. I can't stand it when I got stuck at the red light next to some kids playing loud hip hop music. I usually don't feel very positive when the weather is too hot, when the food I eat is too spicy. I don't like to look at anything bloody and touching a baby's bottom does feel much better than touching the sole of my feet.

Expose your senses to something pleasant sure do bring relief to your stressed mind. Below is some links from the BBC about how music effect our mind, our feeling.
