I started having some intermittent pain in the left upper part of my abdomen, directly at the bottom of the sternum on left side. Im assuming it has something to do with my acid reflux that has been flaring lately. Ive noticed some nights when I get home from work that once I become relaxed my stomach starts to burn just like my throat does with acid reflux. I was once diagnosed with IBS. I later found that to be stress related. Well while I was reading an article on IBS, I found this.
"Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms are varied, even more so since a collection of diseases are considered under the same name. Some possibilities as symptoms appearing due to IBS or in patients with such a condition may include the following items:
Abdominal discomfort Abdominal distension Back pain Bloating Bowel habit changes (including urgency) Chronic abdominal pain Constipation Diarrhea Fatigue Fibromyalgia Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Genitourinary system symptoms Headache Psychological symptoms Relief upon bowel movements Tenesmus "
WOW! How many of those symptoms that you've just read do you KNOW to be TMS/ stress related? I thought that was pretty amazing! |

IBS is well known to be stress related but most of the medical profession will never address it as a psychological issue. Generally, they will concentrate on diet because the stomach digests food then this must be the solution. Even though they will use the word “stress” as a potential cause they then ignore it and typically will not address the root cause but the symptoms.
You may find this article interesting http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1350238/Feel-bloated-Cramps-The-problem-BRAIN.html#ixzz1C2YM7pSm. St Mark’s hospital specialises in bowel problems and they are researching the brain/gut reaction. It will show you that the brain has a direct affect on IBS.

Thanks for the link, PhilMid. It is quite timely as I have been experiencing a range of symptoms lately and now IBS has joined the list. I have suffered symptoms of IBS off and on since childhood. Although it hasn't been the most disruptive symptom in my life over the last decade, it most certainly is the longest running. |

Thanks for the article Phil. TMS symptoms may occur when our "gut" feelings are in conflict with our conscious mind. I found the following quote from the article interesting:
"Indeed, the gut has its own neurological system — called the enteric nervous system — sometimes referred to as the second brain, as it is lined with hundreds of thousands of nerve cells which communicate with the central nervous system."

It's funny, I'm sitting here crying my eyes out because my stomach hurts so bad and I came here to post on it and this was here. My gut feels like my mind, tortured. And it's all because I can't stop stressing. I can't stop stressing about my pain/health, my broken down car, being a month behind on my mortgage, I worry if I'll be able to keep supplementing my parents, etc. Yeah, those are all stressful situations, but you know there are worse things than having to live with your parents. Like, exacerbating your pain to such an extreme because you can't stop fearing and stressing and I don't know why I can't stop.
I just want to give in and just start taking klonopin, but then like Bryan said, the cure is worse than the disease. And then I'll only stress about getting off of them lol!
What I need more than anything is a TMS therapist. But oh guess what? Getting to one requires driving freeways and I have a phobia of driving on them. I haven't driven on a freeway in about 3 years. What an embarrassing thing to admit. I wish I could find a TMS therapist that does web cams. Anyone know of one that offers that type of service?

You should be able to find a TMS therapist who does phone sessions, I don't know about web.cams. I did some excellent phone sessions with dear Dr. Donald Dubin who unfortunately has passed away. It's no shame not driving on a freeway, I'm with you, they are scary and dangerous places. Here in Kali, if you screw-up you're road-kill and they just keep running you over or shove you over to the side of the road. If you're from NYC, you probably never may have needed to learn to drive, plenty of sub-ways, cabs and towncars. I like the blue hiways for my road trips and have done old US 50 cross country a few years back and may do it again this winter when the snow starts falling.
For TMS therapists see my sig below. Good Luck!

Hi Tom,
Thanks so much for your response. It seems as if you really have a genuine interest in helping fellow TMSers. I just wanted to report that I'm doing much better as of today. I think what helped was waiting in a car in front of a grocery store because it's to painful to walk through one. And it just really pissed me off watching everyone bustle about living their lives and I can't. I deserve to have a great life. It's been amazing how much just telling myself what I deserve and how I'm not being good to myself has helped. I'm so used to being dependent on doctors to help me, that I'm forgetting that my problems aren't physical, they're mental.
Well, I just wanted to thank you for the response and let you know how I'm doing. MUCH BETTER!
Thanks, Taylor |

my symptoms progressed and were affecting my performance at work. I took a trip to the doctor, she listened to me explain my symptoms, then mashed on my stomach. she said she thought i had gastritis and could be on my way to having an ulcer. she prescribed me carafate 4x's daily and prilosec 1 time daily. this is my 2nd day on the meds. so of course no real difference yet.

Hi Walnut,
I'm sorry to hear your symptoms are getting worse. It will be a lot easier to recover from if you don't get to the point of ulcers. Those take a long time to heal. I can't take carafate, it turned my tongue brown and rock hard, it was like having a rock for a tongue lol. AWFUL! I'm taking slippery elm and licorice vitamin. It seems to be helping quite a bit. I took prilosec for a really long time and it didn't do much for me at all.
I would imagine you are getting these symptoms due to stress or some sort of anxiety? I can't believe how much my symptoms reduced in just 2 days after suffering for almost 2 years with this crap. I did it by just meditating, refusing to stress and being OK to let the chips fall where they may.
Gastritis for me as been the worst of all my symptoms. It's just soul-stealing. Try to make your life as stress free as possible. That's the only thing I've found that works.
Good luck, please keep us up-to-date on how you're doing.
Taylor

Thanks for the kind words TJ and glad to hear you are better and on the TMS path. Busy, bustling supermarkets are microcosms of our TMS creating culture. When I was deeply depressed, (depression is an affective form of TMS), it was a great ordeal to venture out to one. The Safeway nearest me is a nightmare from a block away. The parking lot is a fender bender wasteland, with people racing through while seniors with limited vision are attempting to back out of the handicapped spaces. Once you're inside the mayhem continues. It's one of their newer remodeled mega superstores, football fields long. You do a 5k before you get out, if you ever get out. It's one of the busiest stores in the chain designed so you must bump into everything and everybody--there should be traffic signals at each aisle's intersection. On a good day it's cold corporate chaos, if you are in the throes of TMS, it's a nightmare. So, don't underestimate the perils of the supermarket. It can be a much better experience and even relaxing if you go during off-peak hours like late at night.
Cheers tt |
