This morning I had a pretty bad nose bleed. I had just read an email that upset me and made me cry. I had already been feeling frustrated and stressed lately. And I was really surprised to feel big drops of something dripping on my blouse, bigger than my tears. I looked down to see bright red blood and then felt it coming from nose. I hadn't cried very hard, just a sad type of crying. The bleeding stopped after a few minutes. The last nose bleed I had was in 1997 when I found out that my father had died 2 years earlier and no one had informed me.
Anyway I read on the net that nose bleeds are a common phenomenom if not caused by physical damage or desease. I checked my Dr. Sarno books and didn't see nose bleeds listed. But I'm pretty sure that my unconscious mind didn't want me focusing on the root cause of my upset feelings.
Anyone else experienced this? |

Hi Maccafan,
I'm sure you are right and there is a TMS/stress component. I will get nosebleeds when I have to be somewhere and perform on time like for a tennis tournament match. My guess is there's a TMS/stress related increase in blood-pressure causing it.
I recently found these : http://www.nasalcease.com/ but have not needed to try them out yet.
Knowing they are in my first-aid kit probably helps to lower the TMS/stress volume control.
Cheers, tt

Hi tt,
I was hoping you would reply. I agree with you. Unless this keeps happening I'm not going to worry about it much. Thanks for the info on nasal cease.
I wonder if your nose bleeds sometimes before you're going to play tennis to distract you from any unconscious concerns you might have about your hip keeping you from playing your best game?
I had recently learned that the best thing to do is Not lean your head back but forward and out some so the blood doesn't go down the back of your throat and make you nauseous. This can also lower the blood pressure in the veins of your nostril. Plus gently squeezing both nostrils together right under the bridge of the nose helps too.
I've had some just plain weird TMS symptoms through the years but this is one of the weirdest ones and scariest ones. But the whole idea of TMS is to scare you and distract you from the real problem.

Thanks for your kind words Maccafan and thoughts on my hip. It is what it is. It may have started with TMS but it became a compensatory gait disorder and I've learned as much from it as from any coach, as of the moment, it is my best coach. I'm not up for a replacement, but I would entertain something arthroscopic. I'm watching and waiting for the doctors to stop "practicing" and start doing. While I have great respect for physicians, I've played tennis against too many docs, to believe all their calls.
The nose bleeds are more of an annoyance. A couple of things I do to stop them when I'm in a hurry and running out the door, is there's these things called styptic pencils. They are a white thing you buy in pharmacies to stop bleeding when you cut yourself shaving. They are getting a bit hard to find and costs about a dollar. I'll stick it up my nose and roll it around. It's a bit yucky but works and then jam some toilet-paper (clean) up their to plug it up. I had a lot of nose bleeds when I was a kid and it's interesting they are coming back. There's a minor surgical procedure where they cauterize the vein in the nose and may look into that someday.

Thanks Ophelia, next time I see my doc, I'll inquire about the cauterization procedure. Is it done in your doctor's office or by an ear, nose and throat surgeon? Nose bleeds have been an annoyance on and off since I was a kid. O, can you give me some more details on the procedure please?
Cheers, tt |

I very rarely get nosebleeds, but the other day, writing Christmas cards to my infuriating family, I had a sudden spatter-fest. Stress and stress alone!

Hi TT yes I had it done in the office by an ENT dr. & surgeon, it is very simple and last minutes first he put some cotton wool laced with anethstetic up your nostril to numb any pain [there was none] then he proceeded with the cauterization. Very simple indeed I have had no nose bleeds since, however tomorrow i leave for Miami a 9 plus hour flight from France, so fingers crossed all will be well. Ophelia |
