I have recently had a recurrence of TMS. Four years ago, I had left side pain in my lower back, buttock, and leg. MRI showed a herniated disk and spinal stenosis. I saw a TMS doc, and slowly recovered in 4-5 months.
A couple of months ago, I had a kidney stone on my right side. I get them a lot, and the symptoms range a great deal. A CT scan showed a 6mm stone in my right kidney. Fearing that this might be too big to pass, my stress level shot up and the pain started radiating to my lower back on the right side.
I thought this new pain might still be the stone, but it soon turned into classic sciatica, which my GP told me could not be caused by a stone. A few weeks later, I passed the stone passed and was greatly relieved on numerous levels. However, the sciatica remains. I have resumed TMS treatment, but once again it is taking a while to click.
As it stands now, I have the exact same symptoms on the right side as I had on my left. The pain varies from day to day – sometimes it’s a dull ache, sometimes toothache-like, and sometimes like electric shock. It will also move up and down my leg from day to day. I checked my journal from last time, and it all reads the same.
My dilemma is whether or not to get an MRI. I did have my back x-rayed when I had a kidney stone followup, and it was negative. On one hand, I think I should get it as part of due diligence. But on the other, I know that anything “abnormal” that shows up on the MRI will freak me out despite my knowledge of and belief in TMS. At this point, I’m leaning toward not getting it, but I’m still wavering.
Any thought would be appreciated.

My thought is the same, you just had a MRI for your kidney stone and I assume it didn't show anything wrong in the same area for your sicatic nerve. But, I'm not a doctor, I only slept in a Holiday Inn Express last year. I had a kidney stone myself a while back and got them to throw in an image for my arthritic hip that didn't tell me anything I already didn't know.
Since your TMS savvy, have the MRI if you want, just be prepared to come to your own conclusions if they start finding "gray hair of the spine" kind of stuff. I just got over a "frozen" shoulder but it took several months. This TMS stuff requires some patience.
Good Luck

I had a kidney stone back in 2004, and when I went for a CT scan it found a lesion on my liver. I was totally freaked out since we just had our first child two months earlier. It took two years of MRIs monitoring its size for the doc to rule out anything serious. Needless to say, the thought of any more radiology tests - for any reason - scares the wits out of me. |

I finally went for the MRI. Bulging disk pressing on the nerve. The nurse laughed with surprise when she heard how relieved I was to hear this.
I hiked 4 miles last Thursday and ran a mile on Friday. The mile run was limited only by my lack of cardio. Mind over matter. |
