Look I know I'm obsessing on this but just one more time here. If I cld just here someone say they are experiencing the same type of numbness/spasms I think I cld move on. My L leg from the top of the foot up to the knee- all front of leg has gone into what feels like a spasm/charlie horse/freeze. It last 1-5 min.s. If I calm myself down instead of freaking it goes away sooner. Symptom two-usually happens on different days - the L leg numbness is not like your typical leg falling asleep with the pins and needles. It is like the leg has felt like lead with little motor skills. Could this really be TMS? All I keep hearing about is the type of numbness where the leg/arm/hand falls asleep (pins/needles) Not like deadness, heavyness, where you can't control it or lift it. Please help!

My left leg sensations (that I call sciatica) feel similar, at times, to what you have described. I have the dead, heavy sensations all the way from my toes, wrapping around the outside and then to the front of my ankle, to the bottom of the knee very often. I feel like I cannot use this leg, but I actually can if I try - and just about as well as I can use the right leg. I also have problems in the front of the left thigh, but that's more of a cramping sensation....I'm about 60% better since I started doing the TMS work in earnest (and starting blocking any thoughts of structural rationales) about a year and a half ago. The most important part of the TMS work for me is disputing and defying the conditioning (which is SO hard) and banishing any, and I mean any, thoughts about structural abnormality. |

Cyn, I had exactly what you are describing in my forearms and hands. And yes, it is very difficult to remain calm when you are writhing in pain. My left was worse than the right for some reason. I have been battling serious leg problems and seen Sarno when this popped in to torment me.
I went to the neurologist and was about to do a list of tests to "determine" what the problem was and caught myself feeding the monster instead of using my new found tools. I'm sure the doctor would have diagnosed all kinds of nonsense that required endless treatments.
It got worse before it got better. I would wake up in the middle of the night in agony. I never went back to the doctor for any tests and instead tried to determine where the psychological reasoning was for the pain. IT WORKED. I know what was causing my hands to go dead. I know you can figure your's out too. I have not had an episode in months. While I would describe the pain as frightening and horrific, I KNOW there was never a physical problem.
I suggest you tell your leg to cut the crap and you're on to the game it's playing on you.
Feel good, Polly |

Thanks guys-Polly how did you get at the reason. I meditate, visualize, pray, have hypnotherapy and I feel like IT'S trying even harder then I am. Do you think that the pain gets worse or your subconcious creates new pains and deadness because it's fighting back hardercause it knows you're working on getting at the pychological cause? Hope you are doing better-Bless You

I have noticed that the harder I try to "get at" the reasons for my pain, the less success I have. Sometimes the perfectionism that adds to my TMS personality tries to get involved in the TMS process and just causes more resentment and anger. I have the most success in understanding the emotional reasons that start the TMS process by waiting until I have enough space from the particular situation to clearly see the connection. After all, Dr. Sarno says we don't have to change our personalities or experience the rage (we probably couldn't if we wanted to) we just have to see the connection between our minds and our bodies. |

When you are trying to discover the reason for your pain please don't focus so much on the big stuff that you forget the small every day aggravations, or ongoing situations that you seem to be dealing with but in reality are just pushing out of your consciousness. A very serious situation was the original trigger for my first back pain attack, but since then I have discovered a host of "little" things that will trigger pain increases. Now that I am aware of my reactions to every day stresses I am having much more success in getting rid of symptoms.
