Has anyone heard of this condition? Someone I know has this medical condition. Curious if it always creates pain. Could the pain be TMS?
Thanks.

Hi molomaf,
Sorry, I'm not familiar with this, but found some information on it from a resource of the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (Medlineplus.gov):
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001240.htm

Sounds like a structural deformity of the spine due to a variety of potential causes. Looks like it can be pretty serious as well.

As far as TMS pain, that can be pretty tricky, because it can occur anywhere, including the site of a structural finding, but, not everything is TMS.

Best,
Peg

Thanks Peg,
Yes, this condition sounds awful. I know that not everything is TMS which makes it so tricky. One of my clients has this condition and it is causing him a great deal of pain and is on powerful pain meds. However, he is also presenting with anxiety and depression, so I asked that question to find out if anyone had heard of this in connection with TMS. I may send him to a tarpit yoga listed physician to find out for sure.
Thanks again.

Ta dah, finally I will get some sympathy. It's bloody agony.

TMS work doesn't work very well on it.

Love is the answer, whatever the question

I think having him consult with a TMS physician is worth a try, because while he may have this structural condition, it may not actually be the cause of his pain.

Sometimes, when a physician is unable to explain their patient's pain, and they find a structural abnormality, they may attribute the pain to that. Many of them aren't familiar with the psychosomatic causation.

The TMS physician can check for tenderness in other areas, mentioned in Dr. Sarno's books, take a medical as well as his psychosocial history.

That said, however, even if his pain is due to the structural issue, mindbody work could be of help to him. As far as his anxiety/depression, it would be important to find out whether these may have pre-dated his pain, or if they are a result of having chronic pain. In TMS theory, anxiety and depression can be looked at as equivalents of the pain.

It's good of you to look into this as a potential way of helping your client. I hope you are successful and can help him with this. Although, as we know, it will only help him if he is open to looking at the connection between his emotions and his pain.

Good luck,
Peg

Wavy,
I had not heard of this condition until recently but from what I have seen of its structural presentation, it looks very painful. How do you deal with the pain aspect? Does TMS work even a little? Maybe there is something I can pass on to my client that might help. Thanks for coming forward. I am very sorry that you are in agony.
My client believes that the curvature of his spine is due to heavy school backbacks he had to carry? Does this sound feasible?

Michele

Thanks Peg for your response.

The only thing that helps - and this helps sometimes for months - is adjustments from an MD who is trained in a spinal adjustment practice called Orthomanual Manipulation, which is only practiced in Holland!!!

I have a friend who is trained in it, and sees a couple of people here in Marin County, although he is a full-time HMO doc doing other stuff.

Other kinds of manipulation (chiro and osteo) have only made it worse.

TMS work helps but just takes the anxiety off it.

I think the whole "hunchback" thing got caused in my high school years - stress + bending over my schoolwork for hours and also probably carrying those damn books!

xx
