It's really good, anyone else read it yet?
He wrote Divinci Code, which was the best book I ever read till now. Talk about suspense, my hands hurt from grasping the binder too tightly and I got a heck of an education about the founding fathers and the architecture of Washington D.C. to boot.
I reccomend that anyone stressed out by their religious upbringing and their increasing scientific knowledge and the conflict between the two read this book. It doe'snt matter what your denomination is either.
If you particularily got a lot out of "The Secret" then you'll love this book too. Talking to alot of the members here about my stresses, especially after talking to Baseball65 (who could've been used as research for the book, did you get a call from mr. Brown piggy? lol) he got me thinking in this direction before I read it. And now it's in writing, well a novel, but Dan Brown does his research if you've ever read his stuff.
For a long time I felt the truth was in the middle with religion and science, and I felt that "The Secret" was great in bridging that gap, and now a suspenseful thriller has emerged that will bring further enlightenment to the masses I feel.
If you've read my posts in the past, I have been very critical of books reccomended here, but this one's a winner and I feel may relieve some inner tension about your beliefs you did'nt even know you had till you read it. Enjoy, it's great!

Thanks Skizzik, I think I will. Sounds fascinating. Besides, it's good to take a break from all those self help books, that aren't helping.
I saw Dan Brown interviewed about the book and found it very interesting. One question. Should I read the DaVinci Code first (I haven't read that yet)?

Hi Peg,
I thought everyone already read Divinci code haha.
Let me clear something really quick, HBP was the best book I ever read! Haha
Ok, should you read Divinci Code first? Hmmmm....
I did, because it existed first. D.C. Really opened my eyes, and angered me to what was taught to me in my catholic upbringing. I never felt comfortable with the literal bible story translations I was taught, and to boot (why do I keep saying to boot? Lol) my mother bounced from strict catholic to born again and back to strict catholic and her addiction to organized religion has been one of my biggest life stressors as a kid and now.
Having said that, as much as I loved D.Code, I think it confirmed some things I felt about religion, and perhaps left me feeling kinda bummed, even though the book was amazing. I think afterwards I was now open to reading the Secret, Eckart Tolle, buhddism (sp?) , Byron Katie etc. Spiritually, I think I knew where I was headed, but I needed confirmation.
So, perhaps I was mentally ready to hear some great things about spirituality to make me feel good again.
Not hear about them I should say, but rather have them put into perspective in a way where I appreciate now everything I was taught, but can't explain why cause I don't want to spoil the book. I would like this thread to go on for discussion about Lost symbol though, as long as you know their will be spoilers in it.
Yeah, so I think if your'e interested in reading D. Code, then do it first, then read "lost symbol" because we all want the bad news first. Haha
Whatever you do, don't see the movie, (DC) it's horrible, but it is ok to think of the main character as Tom Hanks.
You can skip the book Angels and Demons too, it was so-so. More educational then exciting.
I finished the book last night (Lost Symbol), and I'm in a very good mood today, mentally, spiritually, and physically if you know what I mean. (You know, those symptoms everyone talks about on this site.....to boot. :) ).

Hi skizzik--
Not sure Dan Brown's facts are all that (facts). You might want to go with someone more respected in the biblical scholarship field for your hard and fast facts. I'd suggest Bart Ehrman's books--he even has one on the DaVinci code, I believe. I haven't read that one but have really enjoyed his latest, "Misquoting Jesus" and "Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible."
The guy is an ex-evangelical who went into the field of biblical scholarship with intents of strengthening his and others' beliefs. He, however, ended up having to radically change his beliefs in light of his scholarship.
I'm one who has been greatly relieved to no longer have to believe something that never seemed completely right to me. I know what you mean. |

Hi swm,
I'm not on a search to discredit anything. I read Dan Brown's books because they're heart pumping suspense thrillers with "facts woven in" as Dan Brown puts it in his interviews.
I feel that (ookay, weird time lol) that law of attraction led me to read the books, and I feel better for it. I'm pretty content about it and hope members don't think I'm on a quest to prove or disprove anything. Maybe others can relate to what I've felt thought whatever and benefit.
As far as his facts go, I have watched some so called Dan Brown discreditors, and they seem to be biased strict catholic/christians afraid of members reading his stuff. Dan has a great way of putting his facts that are straightforward and easy to understand and extremely fun to read. The discreditors seem to have to jump through hoops to supposedly prove him wrong and they leave me more perplexed.
The irony here though, is that my urge to go to church, believe in prayer, belief that said prayers actually do something has intensified since reading this book (as well as having read the secret first), which is the opposite of what the discreditors feel.
Having said that, again Divinci code was a harsh look at catholic mantra, where as I can see this book (L. Symbol) returning people to their faith with a new humbling respect to all other faiths and therefore not bring out the hater's as much. Can I get an Amen brotha!!!!! |
