Hi all,

I been wondering lately if perhaps repressed positive emotions can also lead to tms symptoms. at least in my own case, I feel I've been repressing all my emotions, not just the "negative" ones. things like love, joy, happiness, etc. seem to get repressed too, and I wonder if that contributes to my lingering symptoms.
and what about repressed sexual stuff? I know that Freud's work was concerned with repressed sexual stuff, and that sarno discounts these theories, but again in my case, i think it might be an issue.

any thoughts? experiences?

I think you must be subconsciously convinced you do not deserve positive emotions, which has to do with low self esteem. Sarno has explained it very well in "The Mindbody prescription". Low self esteem lays in the bottom of it all.

In fact, you just gave me a hint about what has contributed to the relapse of my sciatica a week ago....thank you! I have been forbidding myself to enjoy life.

yes, I have this problem. If I can't smile and express feeling happy about something, I get pain!

saying it's all due to low self esteem seems like an easy answer, of course I have low self esteem, but that too seems like a symptom of some deeper disturbance . just saying it's low self esteem doesn't solve the problem, how do I GET high self esteem? it's not that simple.

HAPPINESS, JOY, LOVE, SUCCESS….and a multitude of what we call positive feelings place a tremendous amount of stress on us. Just because these are emotions that may makes us feel good doesn’t mean that they aren’t stressful.
Sometime it is possible to believe that we do not deserve to feel good so when we feel happy we also feel guilty causing stress and negative emotions.
There is a list in MINDBODY PERSCRIPTION .. there are may good feelings and emotions listed as a cause of stress. Retirement, new job, having a child winning the lotto ( I added that one myself)..and so on.
Life is no so simple. Look back to your childhood and you will figure out why you have difficulty feeling. After you figure it out you will begin to feel better physically as well as emotionally.
