I've been working on my TMS since January of last year. I've been working hard on conditioned responses and self talk in the last month. I received a TMS diagnosis from Dr Sopher in August and I've started seeing a therapist in August as well. I've always been perfectly healthy my entire life, but recently at the beginning of the month I got sick with a cold and had a fever and everything. I haven't been that sick since I was a child. I never get sick. Then I started having constant pain in my tooth that has a recessed gum, and have to go to the dentist for that. Now (sorry guys) my migraines came back the last two days and then I started bleeding on the 16th day of my cycle - this after having a regular 28-day cycle my entire life. Part of me thinks this might be coincidence - real problems happening at once - and part of me thinks these are TMS equivalents.
I did just get back from a stressful trip in which I was the center of attention, which Always freaks me out. So this might be stress? But I also had decided months ago that when I got back from this trip, I'd get back to starting my real life. So have been having anxiety on Sunday nights.
Is it reasonable to suspect these are TMS equivalents, and that my TMS is kicking and screaming because Im finally really onto it?
Has anyone had these types of

A cold and fever isn't TMS, and your sudden migraine recurrence could well be related to the sinus pressure of the cold. As we all know, stress can weaken the immune system and make you more susceptible to cold viruses, and it can distrupt your cycle, too. Tooth and jaw pain could more likely fall into the TMS category, but do see the dentist before concluding this.
You didn't mention what symptoms you have that you know are TMS. Is it the migraines? In any case, to me your story sounds like you became worn down by the stress of the TMS diagnosis, the commencement of therapy (and maybe the surfacing of some emotions), your trip, and the position of being at center stage.
TMSers still do get sick, for real. It IS difficult sometimes to separate the bonafide from the somatized...take it easy and hope you feel better soon. |

Yes it is very possible. You just said you just got back from a stressful trip, etc. How about doing some writing about how you're feeling?
I believe a cold, fever, etc. can be mind/body issues (I don't always use the term TMS or equiv.), especially because our immune system is affected when we are stressed and these conditions can easily result. RE: the female issue, have had that come out of nowhere--last time when there was a death in the family.
Be kind and nurturing with yourself. But I'd get writing ASAP. Personally my health has improved since I have rid myself of emotional trash. Emotional healing induces physical healing.
Best wishes,

Hi there. I know it's a bit awkward and I don't know how old you are but do you think you may be perimenopausal? I ask coz some of what is happening to you may be hormonal.
Have you seen a gynecologist about the bleeding? It may be nothing but always good to check.

Thank you for your comments! Winnie - my main complaints are migraines and neck pain. They improved drastically since I saw Dr. Sopher, but have come back with the cold/ fever, tooth issues, hormonal issues. It is hard to parse these things out.
Miz, I'm writing, sometimes I wonder if i'm missing something!
Mala, I'm 39 so don't think I'm perimenopausal yet, but maybe I should check it out with a gynecologist. I just have gotten to the point where I've stopped rushing to the doctor because everything always comes out normal. So, I don't trust my symptoms very much. got married in July and then we had two wedding reception parties in August - three weeks after we came back I got sick, had the tooth issues and hormonal issues, etc.
I can see it being TMS, stress, it's hard for me to tell the difference between stress and TMS. |

Yes, similar happened to me when I was trying to kick my RSI. It felt pretty overwhelming.

You know I was always pretty regular with the periods too, but it seemed during periods of stress or like going on a trip or something, my periods seemed to get a little out of wrack. I don't think that is uncommon so I wouldn't worry to much about that.
I don't think everything is TMS- I believe that maybe your tooth pain is legit , and could be your migraines are from worrying about your tooth and your irregular cycle.

Dr. SChubiner's blog this week is on the whole topic of "Why haven't I gotten better?" I think it's really good:
http://www.yourpainisreal.com/blog/
His on-line lecture also talks about how some + change in your life (e.g., getting married) can also cause stress; he talks about how his back pain developed right after his daughter was born.
On the topic of tooth pain, I absolutely bellieve it can be psychogenic - I've had it happen to me! I was having tooth pain earlier this year, and it went away for a few weeks. One day I thought, oh, my tooth hasn't hurt for a few weeks. And then it came back almost immediately - and went away again. Oh, our minds. Who knows?

Getting married is a very happy occasion but also one that puts a huge amount of stress on you. I'm talking not only about the actual events themselves though God knows how overwhelming they can be but the actual state of being married & the day to day pressures. In fact sarno lists it as one of the bigger stresses in life.
It's not hard to understand why when you see all the adjustments one has to make in the process. I remember the first 6 months of my own marriage and thinking to myself 'what have I done'. The selfish childlike unconscious was probably very angry at having to do things differently & adjust to someone else being around. Your conscious may not be aware of these adjustments but yout unconscious definitely does.
Something to think about anyway.

The cold, tooth pain and migraine may all be related. Perhaps you have a sinus infection. It has happened to me after having a cold. Sinus pain is often mistaken for tooth pain since the sinuses in your cheeks are near your teeth. Maybe your migraine is acually a sinus infection headache. The only way to tell is to have an x-ray.
Good luck |
