ok, so your'e all world reciever Randy Moss.

You exploded on to the scene as a rookie years ago. But you did'nt have to step up and be a leader on that team the minnesota vikings. They had Carter, Smith, Culpepper. All you had to do was run and make catches.

Then you go to the Raiders and your'e the only star on the team. Your'e career takes a miserable downturn and you can't lead because it's not in you. You just complain that no-one can get you the ball. Much like when things went awry in Minnesota.

Now no-one believes in you. The Patriots take a shot at you. They have all-world, all-millenium quarterback Tom Brady who leads the team to several superbowl appearences. You flourish once again setting numerous records.

Oh no, Tom Brady goes down this past sunday for the whole season. Thats ok though because your'e talented enough to take on the whole team now and lead them to victory. The whole massachusettes area is depending on you to lead. You've never been injured in your whole career and your'e healthy and set to go for Sundays game. Oh, wait a sec

I don't think most of the normal population could know what type of demand a pro athlete - especially an NFL football player - puts on their body. There is such thing as a real injury, and a lot of these guys play hurt very often, and they aren't playing hurt with TMS....they are literally abusing their bodies while they are really injured.

why "this" week? why now?

There are very injury prone players in the nfl to the dismay of many fantasy football owners.

Brian Westbrook never plays a whole season, Adrian Peterson has a slew of injuries he's only 22 or so and is known to miss playing time since college.

Randy Moss has a solid reputation and is not thought of as injury prone for a decade.

There was no play where he hurt his back. According to a radio report I heard this week, he was a "no-show" from practice and the team did'nt know why. The back problem was reported to the press later.

Why "this" week? Why now?

Hmmm... I see what you're saying with the stress and self-pressure link.

I even posted here that I managed to start training and play rugby this season. I haven't been playing or training for the last week, why?, because I have a thigh strain. I've never had a thigh strain in my life, but here's the interesting part. I did it when I challenged the first-team back to a hundred yard dash after training. Why? Why did I do that? I had already identified - and even posted on here! - that I get stressed when I compare myself to the best players (inferiority complex) and that I need to refocus on the lesser players and realise that although I'm not the best I'm not the worst. And even if I was the worst I shouldn't pressurise myself too much! The fact that I beat him is little satisfaction to being out for a couple of weeks and needing to rebuild fitness.

There's a big difference in the way Randy Moss handles pressure and the average person. He wouldn't have made it to that level if it were such a problem for him because it would have gotten exposed somewhere along the line and stopped him from excelling. This is not to say it can't be improved and I'm sure pro players get TMS at times, but understand that the best performers in each sport function very highly in some ways psychologically compared to the normal population (as well as other ways that are much lower than the rest of the population aka poor judgement etc..). I highly doubt that Randy Moss of all players, has or ever will have an issue with TMS to the point where it could limit his performance. Top performers like Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Tiger etc... are actually people that should be getting studied by scientists because they can function so highly in some ways the most people have no idea that its even possible to get in certain emotional/psychological states that these guys get into on a regular basis.
