Hey Guys,
Its been awhile since I've posted. I have been pain free now since about May...
3 weeks ago, I took a 2nd job. The job requires standing in one place. My shifts are anywhere from 4-8hrs. My leg pain is back! Not to mention my feet are killing me.
Is any of this "real" pain, or is it all just TMS. I have been trying to tell myself it is TMS, not b/c of the "medical" diagnosis of a herniated disc...
Has anyone experienced this, where your pain comes back after you add 'more" to your life? |

I'm still learning here but I know I just read in Sarno's book that standing is not a factor. I'm sure he would say - are you unhappy that you have to work a second job, is the work something you like etc. Taking a second job, especially one you don't like, must be enraging.
Notwithstanding TMS, I can't imagine standing in one place for 8 hours would not cause some discomfort, tiring. |

Oh my yes! And lidge has a good point. How do you feel about taking a second job?
Or maybe using muscles that you are not used to using might take a bit to get used to? Like the first time you go swimming or skating after a long break? Maybe some of the more physically active members can answer that. |

Woo, Lidge is right on with that line of questioning?
Do you have any repressed rage about the conditions at your new job? Want to scream about the bordem of standing in one place but that would be socially unacceptable, so instead the mind creates some distracting pain?
That said, when I started working retail after having mostly sat in previous office jobs, my legs and feet just general hurt for about a month as I got used to being on my feet on hard floors all day. I had TMS at the time, but didn't know it and I didn't blame these symptoms on anything but adjusting to the work. Are you able to wear comfortable shoes and clothes?

If you start a new physical activity, you are likely to feel tired/sore at first, because you are using muscles in a different way. But if you persist, you should adapt to it -- you get stronger by stressing your body and forcing it to adapt. That may be what's going on here. But if you don't seem to be adapting to it then, I would start with lidge's question -- is there something that's bothering you about the job? Do you resent working two jobs? |

Standing in place for 8 hours is going to cause anyone discomfort no matter who they are. It is an inhuman expectation to place on anyone. Yes, overtime one may physically adapt, but it is still inhuman.
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." Also chapers 3, 4 and 5 in Dr. Scott Brady's "Pain Free For Life" are very important. |
