The author, Dr. Amy Wechsler, is a dermatologist and psychiatrist (what an interesting combination of practices) in New York City. I wonder if she was influenced by Dr. Sarno?
Thanks for the link Kelvin. It's nice to see that a super mainstream publication will write about emotions and the link to skin problems.
still -- look at how the "box" section at the bottom offers "treatments" for stressed out skin and they are all drugs or creams. I wonder if the doctor wrote that or that was just some copy from the editors to fill the page?
Yes, in his books Dr. Sarno lists a number of skin problems that are TMS equivalents. I myself battled with Eczema when I was growing up. Looking back I can now see it served a psychological function, but I could not see that at the time as TMS was not even known then. We are conditioned in this society to first and foremost think physically when we have a physical symptom or pain and utterly dismiss the psychological origins of those symptoms. I highly recommend the books of Dr. Dean Ornish.
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." Also chapers 3, 4 and 5 in Dr. Scott Brady's "Pain Free For Life" are very important.
