After reading Dr. Sarno's books and Dr. Scott Brady's, I am convinced that I have TMS (as Sarno calls it) or AOS (as Brady calls it). I have tried their techniques and they have helped a little. However, I would like more treatment...either by a doctor or psychologist/counselor trained in TMS treatment. I live in Palm Beach, Florida so I don't know if anybody is local for me but I'd be willing to travel or see if some TMS docs or counselors would treat over the phone. I tried to contact Dr. Bardy, who is in Orlando, but his website does not list a telephone # and I did not get a response to my e-mail to him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Brian |

Hi Brian,
I am a south Floridian as well, although on the West Coast. We are both in the same boat of not being able to conveniently see anybody.
I have to say, when I first adopted Sarno's theories, I felt it was paramount that I see a TMS Doc.
The truth is, you face your own Unconscious/Subconscious sooner or later. Don't feel you need to fly all around to see somebody.
Your time and money might be better spent finding a psychotherapist who would be willing to read a Sarno book, or who is familiar with TMS.
Keep in mind, most of the "treatment" comes from you, in the form or journaling, repeating affirmations until you believe them on a deep level, and thinking psychologically instead of physically.

Hey Beth, Thanks for your suggestion. I would love to work with a psychotherapist - preferably someone who really understands TMS. Do you know how I could find such a person? If they are not local to me, I would be willing to treat telephonically. Brian |

Well then, you're in luck. Don Dubin in California works with Dr. Schechter, the latter of which is a TMS doc. Dr. Dubin does phone sessions. Do a search for Don Dubin on this board, and you should come up with his phone number. I once scheduled 3 sessions with him, but was feeling so much better after the first, that I cancelled the other two, and he was very reasonable about refunding my money.
He used to charge $150.00 hourly.
Let me know how it goes.
I also, very much recommend Dr. Schechters CD's. Just before I was cured, I played them over and over again in my car. Very helpful.
They are available at mindbodymedicine.com
Cheers,
Beth |

It's always worthwhile considering getting one of the Real Docs involved, but you might also find Dr. Schechter's structured journal helpful. You can get it on Amazon and it helps make the connection with various emotions and symptoms more clear.

Thanks, Beth and others for your input. I purchased Dr. Schecter's workbook and started using it the other day. I have Dr. Dubin's # and I will call him in a few days if things don't get better. I was getting a little better but when I would have a set back I would begin to lose faith...and then I would get worse. It clearly helps to keep the faith...which is sometimes hard to do. I am sure counseling w/ Dr. Dubin will help me do so. |

I had a bad relapse today at the gym...it felt like a stroke - pain so bad in on the right side of my neck and head that I had to stop my workout. I had 2 telephone sessions with therapist, Don Dubin, but I don't think I got much out of it. I think I would like to see a TMS physician, as opposed (or in addition) to a therapist, to get a definitive TMS diagnosis. At minimum, I think it would help me keep the faith that I have TMS and ultimately help me in getting better when I have setbacks. As I previously mentioned, I live in FL and tried contacting Dr. Brady in Orlando. However, his phone # is no longer listed and the e-mail I sent him on how to schedule an appointment did not receive a response. I saw the list of TMS docs across the country but I do not know who else to choose. If nobody knows how to contact Dr. Brady then I would be willing to fly somewhere. I presume seeing Dr. Sarno himself would be the best but I think I read somewhere that he does not see patients who live outside of NY. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Brian,
Don't know if this is the list you saw, but here is a list of other TMS doctors, with a contact number for Dr. Brady in FL. http://www.tarpityoga.com/directory.html
Here is a link to a Brady 1.5 hour video presentation. It's pretty good highlights from his book http://www.forestlakechurch.org/Clubs/painfreeforlife.asp
If you can't get a reply on e-mail, try going to his Web site at http://www.bradyinstitute.com/
BTW, you don't need a psychoT who specializes in TMS to get well. Psychotherapy (psychoanalysis) won't delve into your pain manifestations, but it will look at patterns of behavior that may be causing you some self-defeating problems (or TMS). I do understand why you want to see someone though. Piece of mind is important, to allay those concerns that it could be something else.
Best of luck to you and welcome to our forum!

Hey Penny, Thanks for the info. The phone # for Dr. Brady you gave me was the same one that I had...yet I tried calling it again and got a fax beeping noise. I am a little disappointed that Dr. Brady would write such a helpful book yet leave no information for follow up care - or at minimum, he should at least indicate on his website that he is unavailable and suggest patients contact other tms docs. Neverthess, I watched the video of the Dr. Brady seminar from the link you posted...it was helpful. Thanks again. |

There are lists of therapists that specialize in TMS treatment. I know that they are rare, but they are out there. You may want to call Dr.Brady for a list or Dr. Schecter in Los Angeles for his list. I wish I could give you the number of my guy, he's really a great person. But I don't feel comfortable with doing that on a public forum.
Next time I talk to him, I will ask him if it is ok to refer people to him. He does phone sessions because he understands that TMS is not really covered in mainstream psychiatry.
EDIT: Oops, just saw that you were given a list of Brady contacts, that should be helpful. There must be someone in your area. If not I will still ask my therapist about it. |

Hi Brian,
Bet you that beeping noise means mailbox is full. I just called around and got another number for Dr. Brady's office: Try 407-200-2862. (Yes, I'm a recovering obsessive people pleaser
I checked it and got a voicemail box for Dr. Brady and the other person is his assistant (I think), this would be another chance for you to connect with him. If I lived in FL I would be calling him, most definitely! good luck.
