I've been doing better since reading Dr. Sarno's books but has anyone had some success and then seem to backslide? I was doing so good and today my buttock pain is back! I'm trying not to panic. Does anyone else have pain that comes and goes?? |

Relax Gee, This is completely normal. The road to recovery is rarely a straight line. You will have ups and downs. The ups will give you confidence, but the downs are equally important to your long term prognosis. Every time you can use knowledge therapy to work through a tough time, you will increase your confidnce in the program. After doing this over and over, you will find you are getting better and better with fewer and less frequent downturns... My best to you - Sensei

Yes, it is natural to have ups and downs in the course of your treatment. The fact that you have good days is testimony that the diagnosis is correct, and the fact that you have bad days means you have more work to do. Keep reading and journaling.
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." It's all you need to know in order to recover. |

Remember, you have years of emotional repression you are dealing with and the pain is not going to give up with out a fight. Dr. Sarno says you have to think your way out of TMS.

Hi Gee,
The TMS battle is a long term strategy. Its never just over, for good.
Yes, in some cases, Joan Q. Public reads HBP, puts the book down, and walks away never to look back. That's not been the case for many.
So, look at TMS as prevention, a pre-emptive strike. Once your pain is [mostly] gone, you need to continue on daily with breaking the old bad habits that add to your inner unconscious rage pool. The better job you can do preventing your inner rage the better your success will be.
As for your progress, as long as you are overall moving in the right direction, ignore the pain of minor setbacks. Maybe do some extra journaling, re-read the Good Doctor's book(s), concentrate on the things you could be doing a better job at that you may have let slide.
Keep the faith, many of us have gone backwards a bit on our way forward.
Take care, -Stryder |
