Many of you know that Howard Stern is a big supporter (and patient) of Dr. Sarno.
On today's show he described to Howie Mandel (who suffers from OCD) how he cured his OCD using Dr. Sarno's information.
He mentioned that his OCD lifted almost instantaneously while reading Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain after realizing that the theory applies to OCD as well.
He played psychologist for awhile with Mandel, exploring the pressures in his life and trying to figure out what the OCD was distracting him from. He suggested that the OCD might be a way of punishing himself.
I always find it interesting when Stern talks about this stuff ... even his own staff is skeptical. |

Yep. I would have never heard of Sarno's new book (The Divided Mind) if it wasn't for Stern mentioning it about 6 weeks ago. Stern's place in the entertainment world is controversial but no one can deny he is a smart man. You're right, whenever he mentions what he's learned from Sarno, his staff basically takes the "deer in headlights" character about them.
A week ago I had a 4 hour flight. When I got on the plane I was starting to feel some tension and back pain, from what I perceived was oncoming due to the end of a vacation. I was returning to the real world and the anxiety of doing so brought on this pain. Luckily I had "The Divided Mind" with but had read only snippets. I proceeded to read the book for the entire 4 hour flight. When the plane finally landed I was basically pain free.
Sarno's advice on treating TMS is very powerful information. It's a struggle every day to maintain the cure. Sometimes my mind wins out over my body. But I try every day, and my life is so much better for it. |

Good post PainFree, ain't it the truth!
I'm a big fan of Howard's. Found his late night TV show a good way to escape the day's stress. Miss him since he went big time. I guess I'll have to breakdown and subscribe to Premium Cable. |

Stern also mentioned how his OCD tendencies resurface from time to time and it's important to recognize it and fight through it.
This is why it is essential to take a long-term view when it comes to TMS. I am willing to bet that there are precious few who are completely cured, never to experience another mindbody symptom in their lives. The rest of us will have symptoms forever, and just need to treat them as a benign reminder to "take inventory" of our emotions. |

Good post Dave, in TDM, Dr. Sarno says that TMS is universal and part of the human condition. I beleive he even alludes to TMS serving a neccessary protective function in our Darwinian social evolution. We should probably not view TMS as something to be "cured" from, rather a game we play with our two brains that we can eventually get adept at and amuse ourselves with when Howard Stern is in re-runs.
FBN, I'm somewhat embarraseed to admit I have never heard his radio show, only viewed his syndicated TV show before he got the big bucks and went to the Premium Cable channel.
When he was on CBS on Saturday nights, he tore me away from SNL which has gotten pretty lame. Maybe Art can go write for them and help them out. Anyone remember the ABC "Fridays" show? It got pretty fun there for a while.
Should I sign up for his new TV show? Thinking about having to get a cable box gives me TMS stress. I do miss the spanking machine and the bologna toss contests. Are Miss Howard Stern and Dr. Calabria still around? I just heard on FOX NEWS that there are rumors he might return to regular radio because he is loseing his audience.
I can't quite understand what the attraction would be to listen on radio, since his show is so visual. Howard truly is a great artist as well as a humanitarian for championing the GOOD DOCTOR.
Cheers, tt

I mostly listened to his radio show. Some days I would be laughing so hard my eyes would water. I didnt always agree what Howard would say, but I surely respected his fortitude to speak his mind. For all those who used to complain about the content, I would just turn it off if I wasn't amused. I have no idea why people didn't understand this concept.

Not surprised. I don't think its Howard, i think Sirius didn't "get it".
You know, when I first heard Howard was going to Sirius, the monthly fee for SR was something like $15 per month for 200 channels. I thought that was a bit too much, so I sent several emails to Sirius saying something like, "Hey, you guys. You need another price point, like $7.95 per month for 30 channels, $5.95 for 10 channels. Or else you will never get people to move over from FM."
When Verizon decided to get huge defection from cable internet, what did Verizon do? They offered a lower speed DSL (768K) for only $14.95 per month. One half their other tier. Verzion "got it" and got huge adoption.
Sirius should do the same.

I think it's great that Stern is a Sarno fan, but frankly, I've thought he was in the least bit funny. More pathetic, really. He and his guests. |

Hi wrldtrv,
Howard is a champion of the little people. He has given much exposure to alcoholic and semi-retarded dwarfs, that no other media outlet would ever do.
He is also a champion of women, donating much needed plastic surgery and breast enhancements, enabling their self-esteem.
I would be happy to be pathetic if I had a $50,000,000.00 contract.
I respectfully agree with your right to disagree about Howard Stern, and I will not resort to any name calling--you effete snob.

If it wasn't for Howard I might never have found Sarno. He's been an advocate for many years. |

IMO Howard's TV shows never showcase the best parts of his radio show. They choose to focus on T&A and celebrity guests, which are not very interesting to me. I prefer when they are just talking, spoofing on the day's news, which often leads to spontaneous improv that can be side splittingly funny at times.
Howard is different from other "shock jocks" in that he is very intelligent and just has a way to cut through the BS, ignore political correctness, and say the things that many of us feel but don't dare say.
I bet his show has helped keep his TMS symptoms at bay because the character he plays on the radio is an outlet for the angry child inside. In "real life" Howard is portrayed by many as one of the nicest guys you'll meet. |

I thought Stern's movie (I think it was called Private Parts) was very sweet and funny. Its the story of how his show came to be.

Hey Spiro (TT) Agnew. I thought you were a conservative. You should be outraged at Stern's trashing of the culture. He might be giving attention to the dwarfs, retarded...but what kind of attention? Seems to me he is using them to get laughs.
For me, his humor gets old very fast. Each to his own. |

World,
I don't know where you got the notion that I am a CONSERVATIVE. If anything I am an anarchist. I go with the flow and anarchy is what we have out here on the left-coast.
I think for myself and decide each issue on it's own merits. I don't tow the party line nor obey the PC police. On some issues I would be viewed as liberal, on some conservative. But I don't accept any politcal label. I am just a life long-registerd Deomocrat who votes for every Republican I can find--which is darn few out here.
I think a TMS trait is being for the underdog and Repubs are defintely the underdog here in frisco and southern marin, because they believe in America, fair play, honesty, are G-d fearing people and are not hipocrites. It's as simple as that. They are an endangered species.
Although you feel I could not possibly like watching the "King of All Media", because he is "liberal", I exercise my right to watch anyone I want. Howard thankfully doesn't get politcal like Letterman--now there's a tired act which I have stopped watching out of abject bordom--how often can one guess, "Will it float?"?
Howard sticks with what he knows best, foxes, freaks and flatulence. Hookers and porn stars are people too! It's a $50,000,000.00 winning formula. He's the P.T. Barnum of our era. In the good old days you would have to go to a carnival side show to see such acts. Today you can see it in the comfort of your living rooom.
Yes, Howard uses dwarfs and 'tards to get laughs. They seem to enjoy all the attention and celebrity--better than being passed out drunk under a piece of cardboard in Times Square. He even gets 'em laid once in a while, a great act of philanthropic servicing. |

There is a nuance to Stern that long-time listeners just get. It is really not possible to explain why he is not being mean spirited to "Gary the Retard" or why he is not promoting racism when he has the head of the KKK on his show. Stern winks at those who get it, while dismissing and/or poking fun at those who take him seriously or attach some political or social significance to his show. For some reason, many people who don't like his brand of entertainment are unable to simply tune out and move on. They must brand him as evil and crusade against him.
It's an interesting social phenomenon, really. But let's not let this thread degrade into another debate.
Reagarding TMS, I believe Howard has probably helped hundreds of people get out of pain by publicizing Dr. Sarno's books. He even helped Dr. Sarno himself to expand his theory beyond back pain. But just like there are many people who will never get Howard, there will be many who will never get TMS, and are condemned to live a life with psychogenic symptoms. |

Agreed Dave! I have learned my lesson from the Global Warming thread and will NOT leave myself open for name-calling again.
At least The King of All Media is somewhat more relavant to the topic of TMS than the GW thread was. Like any good Greek tragedy, it's good to have a little comic relief, from all the pain and suffering on ocassion.
I would be willing to act pathetic though, for any sum above $5, and where do I get in line for the billions Virgin's Peter Branson is giving away to stop the epedemic of GW?

Not to bring up another sore subject, TT, but remember the Andrew Weil thread? You might want to revise your opinion of him as you work your way through The Divided Mind. Read p.277. There, the TMS physician responsible for that chapter mentions Dr Weil favorably and gives him credit for introducing him to Sarno's ideas.
By the way, you should not generalize the liberal politics of the Bay Area to the rest of the country. In your small area of the world, liberals might have some influence and you might feel overwhelmed, but that is certainly not the case in most of the rest of the country. But since you've been there your whole life you might not know this. Believe me, nearly everywhere else, Republicans are not the poor downtrodden folk you make them out to be. |

I thought TT was being sarcastic about his politics -- "honesty and fair play" you have to be friggin joking. There hasn't been any of that in politics since teddy roosevelt. |

Of course 99 out of 100 politicians are scum-bags and share more in common with their co-horts on the otherside than with their constituents. They show-off their Red Army watches that they trade for Bulovas all the time. But what choice do we have, you vote your wallet and vote for the lies you want to believe.
The trick is to keep the two parties somewhat in check so they don't do any real damage to us. Which-ever party wins power, it going to plunder the National Treasury, give it to themselves formost, to their friends, (those who contributed to their campaigns), and a little may trickle down to us schmcuks at the bottom called citizens.
As it stands today, if you are in the private sector, you vote Repub, in the dream that taxes won't be toatlly dumped on you. If you wallow at the public trough, you vote Dem, because they are the party of the "poor", and will raise taxes on the "rich".
