Hi people, Just a quick intro, I’m 29 male, live in Aus. Yes yes, throw another shrimp on the barby mate true blue cobber digger nugget, and all of that. Got TMS at 22, it beat me up for two years then I discovered THE BOOK, I read it was healed after about a month. A year later, during a bad relationship, I started to get some mild back pain, it got worse and chronic at times. 4.5 years later I’m still trying to beat the TMS. I recently did hypno therapy and that helped me clear out loads of stuff. About a month ago I had a week of pain free living and I LIKED IT. I slept well and dreamt I was happy not sore and not tired. Heaven! I have slipped backwards of late, which has led me to start posting. I guess I’m missing something. I must admit I’m a bad sausage, I don’t journal. I have tried, but it was more of a personal this not for TMS, didn’t realise how important it was. SO now I want to start journaling. My question is, what exactly do I write about? The obvious guess is my emotions from day to day, but I’d like any of the masters input just to ensure that I get this thing right. I’m close to overcoming this, but I really need to give it everything right now. Any advice would be great, as I really want to go over this and make sure I cross my I’s and dot my T’s.......whatever. Thanks

Hi Darko, I am far from a master but I have begun journaling and have done it in the past..It is very helpful but Dr. Sarno says it's good to set aside time (15min in the AM, and 30min in the PM, for example) each day to discipline yourself to keep at it...What I do is write about what is going on in the present, emotionally speaking..and if it leads to something in the past, that's fine..Dr. Sarno suggests also writing about our personality characteristics that are typical TMS traits,,ie..perfectionism, goodism, feelings of inferiority, etc...So I do that as well as write about current life pressures and/or relationships that I am having difficulties with for whatever reason....I have also journaled once w/ my non dominant, left hand to access my inner child, per someone's suggestion on this forum...I am going to try that again..Hope this helps.. I've been journaling for almost 10 years, mostly with my undominant hand, and have used it to recover from childhood issues, heal relationships, clear body pain, discover my subpersonalities, build self-reliance and esteem, etc. You won't find any better resources to get started than:

I don't know how to include quotes from previous posts. Dave, I need your help with that one because I'm too impatient to figure it out. So here is my post from several days ago to answer your question, Art.
There's writing from the conscious mind, which is what we already know. Most of us on this Forum are writing from the conscious mind (left brain) because we are seeking or giving help, venting, and trying to understand our wonderful bodies. It's mostly rational thinking and expressions of "what is". My experiences with healing writing comes from the subconscious, intuitive, creative mind, and unconscious mind (right brain), which is the writing one gets from using the undominant hand. Healing writing opens doors to understanding yourself because it helps discover and understand your "shadow" or "subpersonalities" who control you and how you live your life. You will know when your journaling is healing when you can work through problems, heal your relationships, recover from grief, overcome childhood wounds, interpret dreams, and access the subconscious.
Try writing with your undominant hand for a while. Ask yourself a question, and then start writing. Put down whatever comes without thinking about it, judging it or critiquing it. Let your pen flow.

Indy,
I'm curious how the undominant hand thing is supposed to work for lefties. My dominant hand is the one connected to my 'right-brain intuitiveness', supposedly, since the right brain controls the left hand. So what good would using my right hand do me?

Hey Arm....
98% of right handers need to use the left hand to access their subconscious, intuitive, inner child creative right brain.
66% of left handers need to use the left hand to access same
34% of left handers need to use the right hand to access same
2% of right handers need to use the right hand to access same
For those who try this insightful technique, you may need to play around with both hands to see which one works for you. It also seems to work better for people who are visually orientated and express themselves through art. Ask yourself a question with the dominant hand like "What am I feeling right now?" or "Inner child, what do you need to say to me?". Then put the pen in whatever hand you think is your intuitive one and start writing whatever comes. If nothing comes, ask another question. You'll know when you're using the "intuitive" hand when the words you are writing seem to be coming out of nowhere, or very inspirational, or emotional, or the words are expressed in another tone or voice not like your normal speaking voice.

Personally, I think that the benefits of accessing the intuitive mind would be ofset by the minuses of writing at about two words a minute...
but that's just me. Just write. Don't worry about what hand you use, but force yourself to write about things you would rather not think about. It's normal to procrastinate, but after a few days of doing it in a row it becomes less painful. Also, consistency helps you dig deeper, rather than staying at surface level. |

Singer, Indy, Jim, Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to really work at this as I feel it's helping me. I've trying it more since my first post the other day, and all though I didn't write yesterday, I have been focusing on what I should be writing about. This has forced me to think more about emotions rather than pain, and I must say that I feel really good today. My pain is minimal, my spirits are very high and I can really see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. My mission now is to stay on this path and not ease up and slip back into 'the pain zone'. I have a good tool which is not only good for TMS but really teaches me about myself. I think we should all do this regardless of our condition. I feel the stress about life but I allow that, and I'll just write about. So a good positive post from me, to say thanks and that I'm feeling great. What a great resource we have here guys, it's good to be able to help each other along. |

Thanks. I suspect those are similar stats to the ones for reverse lateralization, where the whole brain is the other way around. Maybe I'm one of those.
