Sarno’s Daily Reminders

Healing Back Pain, page 82, gives Dr. Sarno’s Daily Reminders suggesting to his patients to relax and quietly review these twelve key thoughts at least once a day for about fifteen minutes.

I have chosen to edit these daily reminders somewhat, personalizing them for my own personal daily review. Copy them and keep them posted on your bathroom mirror, as I do! God Bless!

• My back pain is due to Tension Myositis Syndrome, and not to any structural abnormality.
• The direct reason for my back pain is mild oxygen deprivation in the postural muscles.
• Tension Myositis Syndrome is a harmless condition, caused by my repressed emotions.
• The principal repressed emotion causing Tension Myositis Syndrome is my repressed anger.
• Tension Myositis Syndrome exists only to distract my attention away from those emotions.
• Since my back is basically normal, there is really nothing for me to fear.
• Therefore, any kind of physical activity for me is not really dangerous or harmful.
• And so, I should immediately resume all normal physical activity without concern.
• I will no longer be concerned or intimidated by my back pain.
• I will shift my attention away from my back pain and toward those emotional issues.
• I intend continually to be in control of my back pain --- not my unconscious mind.
• I must think psychological, and not physical, at all times.

What Dr. Sarno Tells His TMS Patients (Healing Back Pain, Front Page)

• Resume all physical activity. It won’t hurt you.
• Talk to your brain. Tell it that you will no longer take the pain anymore.
• Stop all physical treatments for your back pain. They may block your recovery.
Don’t repress your anger or emotions. They can give you back pain.
Don’t think of yourself as being injured. Psychological conditioning contributes to ongoing back pain.
Don’t be intimidated by back pain. You have the power to overcome it.
