This is to reply to all the posts on a previous topic that I never read. Anyway, I did not mention EMDR as a treatment for TMS but a treatment for the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. It will not get rid of TMS nor get at the bottom of what is causing the TMS. Whether anyone believes in it or not, it helped me to release alot of emotions related to the abuse. I had gotten tired of just talking about the same things but never feeling any better. Not every thing works for every person. EMDR, by the way, didn't use eye movements. It used the repetitve buzzing in one hand and then the other by a hand held machine.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. So what you did is not EMDR, but something else.

Nevertheless, any theraputic session that helps you release emotions can definitely be helpful in TMS. I believe the benefit comes from the therapy, and not from the (for lack of a better term) "gimmicks".

Actually, EMDR was founded using eye movement but has found that there are easier ways to achieve the same effect. There are some sound biological priniciples that it is based on, however, I do not wish to argue over it's validily. It helped me when other forms of psychology did not. We all have to choose for ourselves what we believe.

Hi Res and Dave,

Here a little respons from Holland. Emdr was for me a very good treatment. I had this therapy two years ago, when I had no or a little tms but lot of fear. It helped me to get rid of ptss . For me it worked also very wel, because I only had to think about the emotional pain I have had during hard times. I could not tell what was going on, so traumatic it was, and so this therapy worked wel for me. Now I can talk about it, without becomming sick.

In Holland they use eye movements but I also heard of a way, with a headphone on. Then the sound moves from one ear to the other. I think that the movements in hands, eyes and sound from ear to ear have some special effect on the brains. I don't care how it exact works, but it worked for me.I have no more feares about the past and I have a good life now.

Only now I have to get rid of the tms.

Greatings and luck
Allie

Coincidentally, I just got done talking to a therapist about EMDR. She is trained to do it and gave me some literature that stated both the pro and con positions. (actually, the fact that she did that gave her credibility in my mind) As Dave said, the naysayers say any good that is achieved is through something other than the eye movement. But there have been several scientific studies that suggest the opposite; that there is something in the use of the eye movement that is the key. I don't see any problem with trying any therapy that has some logical basis--until it is proven wrong.
