I have acute sciatic pain which has lasted continually for 3 years, I have had endless MRI's and CT Scans which show I have a slightly herniated disc at L4 L5, my last MRI was done on my left hip and upper thigh bone as the pain is so pricise, radiating down my left leg and with tingling in both feet. The radiologist and my Docter says the test is completely normal, but they are now suggesting a steriod injection using a CT Scan to precisely hit the area. What are your opinions of these injections I have resisted them so far. Many thanks for any help. Ophelia

I think, as long as you have been checked out medically, that you probably have TMS pain. I had very bad sciatic pain (and I even have scoliosis) and my pain turned out to be TMS related. It is almost gone now.

If I were you, I would consider this route rather than the injections.

Hi Ophelia
I too, had sciatica, with the same medical result as yourself. I also had tingling in both feet. That was three years ago which only healed with the understanding of tms. (I rarely get the pain now, and when I do it passes quickly ). I was never offered any injections but from what I can gather from others they don't offer much relief. Hope this helps, try not to worry about your pain..............its benign and your scans have confirmed nothing sinister is happening.

Hi Chickenbone and Cat, this does indeed help, i know so well in my head that it is bengign, but why oh why does the pain persist and not desist, the great news is so many have kicked it and only hope one day this will too, my Mother died in April, so this does not help the process. Ophelia

Because you fear it Ophelia.
Stop fearing your symptoms. Stop worry about the future of your health and your symptoms will leave.

I tried a series of the steroid spinal injections many years ago for sciatica similar to yours (just one leg however) and it worked a few days but then, each time, I returned back to the baseline pain...My many back surgeries produced the same result - always with the sciatica gone only a few days..I figure that both physical treatments were just not strong enough placebos...Only TMS theory and practice has helped me. (And I need to tell you that the injections are very painful.)

So many thanks Fox and Balto, all your encouragement helps and I will cancel the injection as hwat's the point when I'm not convinced ! but grrrr how something so benign can cause so much continued pain for so long is still beyond me, I have read all the books and know it is TMS but it will still not let, go, THAT is what I don't understand, any thoughts on that ??? or suggestions, gratefully received. Ophelia, I'm dealing with some sciatica right now. I've had it for 1 1/2 to 2 months. I'm 61 years old, and I like to run ultramarathons.

I had some sciatic issues back in my 20's. It would hit me about 8 miles into a long run, and the knot in my R butt would tighten up and hurt to the point that I'd have to slow to a jog pace. Screwed up a number of my early marathons, when I was fit enough to run a good bit faster. One day it left, and it didn't come back for many years.

This current version is tricky. I'll be able to walk for 10 miles one day, and the next time out I'll have to sit at every bench in the park. Also, every time I go to the grocery store to shop, it invariably hits brutally hard, causing radiating pain down my R leg. I can hardly finish self-checking out, and I struggle to the car to sit down again. Thankfully, sitting relieves that awful pain.

Why shopping? Well, it's got to be tms, but apparently there's just enough doubt to keep the darn thing there. In the past, I've had success with tms issues when I got to the point where I didn't care anymore. Indifference becomes a powerful tool- somewhat along the lines of suffering in the breakup of a relationship, and only getting over it when you honestly didn't care anymore. (Meeting a new person helps here.) Maybe when I get to the point where I don't care that sciatica is taking running from me (becoming a swimmer or bike, e.g.,) then the tms sciatica will leave.

I'll keep you apprised. A friend suggested that I just run through the pain. That's a possibility. Others have done that with success.

One thing for sure: I'll be running ultras again.
