Hi I'm new to this forum and the concept of tms in general. I've had numbness, tingling, weird sensations on and off for 4 years now. I've seen numerous doctors, neurologist, physio therapists, etc etc adn i've had many tests done over the years including mri's and nerve conduction tests and everything has come back normal. recently a chiro tested me positive for thoracic outlet syndrome. i've been at a loss with my physical symptoms and i also have anxiety, have had it for a long time. i came across tms recently and read so far 3 of sarno's books. and i've self diagnosed myself with tms (still with caution tho since i haven't been professionally diagnosed with tms) my first symptoms appeared after the birth of my first child 4 years ago, and with my neurological symptoms, i've had 'new' allergies, migraines etc. can i take that leap of faith and accept a self diagnosis of tms? |

A lot of people on this forum after many tests and being told nothing is wrong tell themselves they have Tms. Mostly because the doctors are mostly located in certain parts of the country .
When my regular doctor said it was all in the mind he prescribed anti depressants, those didn't work for the rib pain I had . I read sarnos books and it described me but I still wasn't convinced . I had to see him and it was all confirmed .
Even after he confirmed I went to his therapist and still continued phys therapy without telling him. Therapy for my muscles didn't help so I had no other choice than to post here and continue talk therapy .
This tms is a clever beast .
I'd say its a big possibility you have tms because your doctors ruled other things out .
Hopefully people on this board who never saw a tms doc can respond . |

Your name is pretty telling -- I am not a doctor but these are classic symptoms of anxiety particularly in the absence of any physical findings. I |

Hi mom,
Even a specialist can't give you 100% assurance it is TMS, but from what I read I really think you are right about your own diagnosis. Especially the fact that it started when loosing your first child, this must have made a big impact as I can only imagine. I have a close friend who lost his child and it broke him mentally and physically more than 20 years ago.
I didn't see a specialist on TMS, only doctors that ruled out any physical causes. I convince myself it is TMS, I feel I have nothing to loose from it and can only win from it.
I think you need to be patient as it can take many months and maybe even years to get better. Learn what your strains are, learn how to deal with them, get to know yourself better and learn how to turnaround any habits that feed stress and anxiety.
take care and I really hope you find what you need here. |

hi anxiousmom,
i too had all of the physical treatments done and they did nothing for me, for 2 chronic pain problems i should say in my feet and eyes. i wasn't able to see a TMS doctor either so I had to kind of "diagnosis myself" with it. but really you kind of just know you have it after you've exhausted everything physically that the doctors said to do. if that hasn't worked, where else do you turn you might ask? well nobody is hopeless in my opinion because i've felt that way before and i know im not hopeless.
i also have a long history with OCD and anxiety and in my opinion its the fear of the pain and symptoms that keeps them alive. If you fear your pain and symptoms, consciously or just subconsciously, you're setting yourself up for pain every day. I recommend this forum obviously because the people on here are great, check out anxietycentre.com (this site has everything you need to know about anxiety and the treatment methods are almost identical to treat TMS.) In my mind mind body disorder, TMS, nervous illness, anxiety, etc. are all the same thing. I believe they come from fear. The reason the body picks specific locations for pain is because you fear that specific location being in pain for some reason. For me I fear my eyes hurting because i need them for my job to work, so guess what thats where my pain is.
You might hear the term "being on the fence" when researching TMS and the reason this is such a problem is because if you still think there is something physically wrong with you after you've done all treatments, you're still in fear. You still think you can hurt yourself and that the pain you have will get worse if you do something wrong. This is another way treatment for anxiety and TMS are so similar is because you have to realize these symptoms are benign, they can't hurt you and the only way out of them is to stop fearing them. You have to passively accept, relax your body and your mind so your hyperstimulated state drops down, etc.
I've been researching TMS now for almost 2 years I think but I never stuck to any of the treatment methods long enough for them to work. I was always so busy reading about it (because this gives you short term anxiety relief) instead of actually doing what I was supposed to. But now Im consistently doing deep relaxation each day, really looking at the emotions and whats going on every day with how I react to things, and calming myself down in general.
In fact posting on here for reassurance is a way to get anxiety relief. By the title of your post and your name "anxiousmom" i can tell you're pretty freaked out about the pain and trust me I know what thats all about. |
