I have been enjoying chronic things they might, if I had insurance, call tendonitis in the knee and sciatica among other things. I'm a professional pianist and composer. I'm presently experiencing a fairly intense flare up and I have a scheduled concert in a few hours. I could cancel it, but I'm wondering if I tough it out and trudge and crawl to the concert whether that would be a better thing to do than rest, which is what I would usually do. It's an hour plus journey both ways, at a late hour, and might be difficult to do, and I feel somewhat unprepared for it, but I might want to do it anyway just to show the TMS that it can't run my life. Any suggestions? Thanks!

JUST DO IT!!! You'll feel a lot better afterwards and it'll give you a great boost in your TMS confidences. Can't back out now.

G'luck,I'm rootin' for ya',

Thanks, that really helps, both tonight and for the future! If it's a weird show, so it goes!

Despite a 1.5 hour subway trip in tremendous pain and hobbling, I got to the gig and played and it went really well or, at least people liked my "jokes" and I could play my simpler songs/music without too much struggle. I'm realizing more and more how I play a fool/a freak and at the same time punish myself for it, assuming I should be punished for doing what I want to do. I do the thing I think might be "bad" and then punish myself for it through deprecation, etc etc etc or assume others should do the same. It's hard because in a way, it's thoroughly enmeshed in my performances and my public persona.

GOOD JOB COMPOSER! Think how much better you feel now, then you would have if you'd bailed. Success breeds success.

Thanks. Now next week I have a red eye flight with a short layover in Iceland, arriving in Amsterdam in the morning, playing that night and two more nights. Wahoo!

It's an opportunity to observe guinea pig composer doing things exhaustedly.

Sounds like it could be fun, been to Amsterdam and it's a great town, canals and all that, lots of beer, sardines and the red-light district that I unfortunately only had time to glimpse briefly from the tour boat. My only suggestion to you from a TMS stress perspective would be to leave yourself more time around the events to acclimate and enjoy your new surroundings and not have to be rushing so much. If I'm playing in a tournament, I try to arrive a day or two early to find the venue, maybe a little practice to see if the courts are fast or slow and find out where the bathrooms are.

Have fun,
tt/lsmft

Thanks. I have a bunch of days after this to enjoy the city and many friends there. I'm really excited about it.

Not sure about the red light district. By the way, I really appreciate your open (got to use the word) lasciviousness. How did this come about? I'm no prude exactly and I grew up without religious dogma. I have seen prostitutes and the like and I greatly respect the profession, but I feel a degree of shame that really troubles me. Maybe I don't respect the johns, believing somehow that their stance tends to inherently degrade women and reduce emotions to a financial exchange. I'd like to undo the shame, because, in a way it makes seeing them more desirable. Also, I'm in a relationship with someone I love dearly. She knows what I've done. She is also open to open relationships, but does not feel the shame. I am not comfortable fitting my desires into a box, but I cannot yet proudly stand outside of it. Any suggestions?

Treat women, your self and your desires lovingly.
The only shame is to drop someone from a great height, to discard them once your passion ends. It's the brutality of this that harms. Loving someone, be it momentarily or for all time, is the way.
Shame can be deliciously erotic in the right (loving, mindful, mature) hands.
Have a wonderful time.

Enjoy my country. Only advice I have for you it to watch your wallet in Amsterdam, especially in the red light district.
