Isn't it conditioned response because for me it was the exact opposite, my symptoms would take a short leave? Or could it be that you had to take time off and had more time to dwell on your symptoms? |

I'm almost embarassed to confess this but I always feel randy when bedbound with a virus. Always been like this. And like Alix, any other symptoms recede. I can very easily slide into a more emotional state too, sonething I assumed was a consequence of the vulnerability feeling ill like that can create. |

Many anxiety/panic sufferers report that their condition "takes a break" when the flu or bad cold comes on.
I notice my anxiety (TMS) symptoms get worse at first, then better when actually sick.
Clear proof of what we're dealing with.

Ok, well I guess the answer is No...nobody notices their pain go up when sick. Just me, I guess...this is really frustrating to me because I was feeling a bit better for a while but now am hurting bad again...need some encouragement, feeling discouraged... |

Yes I think it can make your symptoms worse. I believe Fred Amir said it made his worse. It really doesn't matter, just stay the course |

Hey sweetie,
Take heart. Since I've been regularly posting here over the last week, my pain levels have diminished. I attribute this to opening up, listening to the healed, and actually applying their advice. This is why I'm posting an Ace of the Day. It renders it manageable. There's so much fabulous advice here though.
This is another great thread, replete with wisdom:

Thank you, Ace and Plum...I REALLY needed this. I am going to keep living...no matter how bad it gets. I recently went back to teaching indoor cycling after quitting due to the back pain...I really don't want to EVER quit again. I love it so much!!! Thank you for the inspiration...I'm going to listen to Claire Weekes on the way into work in the morning...and PRESS ON. |

Stayfit,
Well, again... my symptoms generally spike up at the beginning of a flu, and then practically disappear. So, I can see an increased rate of symptoms. Also keep in mind that the nervous system can mimic flu symptoms when taxed, so sometimes it's hard for me to even tell. But, the mental anxiety always lessens once I'm actually sick. Go figure.
As Ace said, it doesn't matter. We have to continue our work. I'm not through the forest myself just yet, but I know how to get there and won't stop until I am.

stayfit- yes, i remember when i did have chronic TMS pain, being challenged by a virus would often make the pain worse. I think everyone is different with this, as demonstrated by the range of answers you've received so far. I think the thing is that TMS pain is real physical pain- it is happening in muscles, nerves, tendons/ligaments. It is being generated by the unconscious mind/brain, yes- but it is never the less a very real physical experience- body tissue is affected. My interpretation of my own body was that my body parts being affected by TMS were already compromised by a mild ischemia- a virus just seemed to be adding an additional temporary load to already these compromised muscles, nerves, etc. I think this reflects the common experience (which still happens sometimes) that the body can ache when challenged by a virus. When suffering from TMS the ischemic pain is just being added to with a viral load pain. Would Ace be able to comment on this from a medical perspective?

Dear James. I don't really know the scientific answer to this question. I know that cytokines are released and are integral to the immune system fighting the infection. These can cause body aches. How this affects a dysfunctional muscle, i don't know but I'm sure that probably some of the immune system is dysfunctional also |

In order for the immune system to go into action the central nervous system has to be activated. Then any disease or virus is seen by the body as a stress...then our response it is the topping!! |
