Andy on giving way.
While away windsurfing I parked and saved the spot behind for a friend. There is a rule in place of “first come first serve”, and I was a little uncomfortable breaking this rule.
A visiting windsurfer pulled up and asked for the spot, and I retorted: “No”, as I got hot under the collar! We argued a little until he said: “This was very unfair.” Realizing this truth, as my face reddened I apologized and conceded, and actually guided him into the valued parking spot. We chattered happily for some while after this. I felt a warm glow in my heart that I had done the right thing and made the correct decision. I was later even more gratified when I found out that he was undergoing major heart surgery soon, he had chosen this day to have a last windsurf – no matter what!
Windsurfers have a great sharing tradition, one of the reasons I like being around them.
Please respond with something you did to “give way”; I would like to hear it.
How about it Bryan and Tom?

It's hard to think of a specific incident because I try to balance things out this way: if someone really wants to see a particular movie and I have another preference but I can see how important their choice is, I'll concede without resentment but with pleasure. I just try to weigh to whom the particular event is more important.
My grandmother died and there was an item my cousin wanted really badly for sentimental reasons. I found this out after I had it in my house. I gave it to her because it meant more to her.
I was brought up with a religious view (I imagine all religions have this) that we are to do one good deed a day. Although I am not conscious of this, it becomes ingrained in you and you just live like that...let the person with just a candy bar get ahead of you in the supermarket, things like that.
Andy, your post touched my heart (especially when he told you his story about his heart!). It's stuff like this, what you did, that makes us walk away feeling good especially when the initial anger can be squelched so easily when you see the other person with empathy and caring. |

Andy, you have a great positive energy and you helped me this morning. This is a small example of giving way but it yielded sweet rewards.
My boy enjoys listening to music in the morning. I tend towards a fondness for silence as I shuffle round grunting about coffee. Sometimes I get irritated but today when it oh-so-barely flared, I went to him and placed a tender kiss on his forehead. He smiled with such happiness it transformed my mood completely. I ran him a bath and made hot drinks and we've had a great day.
Best wishes to you. |

Andy it's great to see you continuing to unthaw. It like watching a flower blooming as it sees the sun for the first time. I hope to meet you one day.
Giving away is all that matters, to sacrifice for those you love. Time is the most precious give-away, and to love one another.
The only true give-a-ways are the ones not seen by others. Anyone can make a public gesture. If ego is involved, it doesn't count as much but it still helps. If you're worth billions of dollars it's nothing to give away another billion. The person who has nothing, and still gives is the true caretaker.
