I have a problem with BK especially as it applies to people trying to resolve their TMS. The Work is supposed to be a new age way to solve any problem in a very simple fashion by asking 4 questions around a disturbing thought. The problem with "the work" is that the conclusion is known in advance, which is that the thought that bothers you is false of course. The 4 questions are really just for the effect. It is to persuade you that your are wrong no matter what your problem is. The method is trying to make people think that nothing really matters. It can go pretty far: The pain is not such a big deal. Ruining your relationship or your professional career is okay. If you have pain, it is because you allow it. This is not helpful for TMSers IMO. It is brainwashing and it can work for a while but then it can be a painful wake up. Literally.

In my opinion, as someone who has read this book 4 or 5 times, you have misread what Byron Katie is trying to achieve in the lives of people who suffer. Perhaps you are just not ready at this time to hear or accept what she has to say, and that is fine. Sit with it and just accept the fact that others follow a different path to healing and consciousness. Her work is not meant to overshadow Sarno's work, but merely to help those who are suffering to find some peace through mindfulness as they go through their healing process.

Shawn,
I respect your opinion but "the work" is in the tradition of CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and commitment therapy). While it may be helpful for relationships and other problems, I have seen chronic pain sufferers really get damaged by that form of therapy. That form of therapy usually negates even the existence of an unconscious mind.

Again Alix, Katie says nothing on the unconscious mind. I am not saying that her work replaces Sarno's or other TMS teachings, but only a means to practice mindfulness which you, in your efforts here, have tried to encourage people to do. This is most important, especially for those who are not finding the relief they seek in need some skills to cope in the meantime.

On another note, I sent you a private e-mail and you did not respond. Perhaps you missed it.

Sylvia, I am turning off ego and not responding. :)

Shawn, I'll check my email. Thanks for reminding me. I have done the "Headache in the Pelvis" clinic many years ago unsuccessfully and part of the clinic was the study of BK's books. So I have been exposed to it more than superficially. Yes you are right that she does not mention the unconscious mind, I am just saying that she is part of a recent movement that negates Freud. So I am just worried that at the subliminal level it negates what Sarno teaches. Again, if it helps you and others, the more power to you and I am not to argue with that.
I read the James Alexander book during the holidays and he has a section dedicated to CBT techniques which he was taught himself. He exposes very eloquently the shortcomings of that technique in overcoming chronic pain.

Shawn, let me expand a little bit. My NET practitioner taught me that the unconscious mind is like a trapped 2 year old inside your body.
That unconscious mind will not understand complex mind twisting thoughts a la BK. The unconscious mind doesn't understand double negations for example.
It will react very well to simple messages however. The BK "the work" is 100% at the conscious level. The unconscious mind is not deemed relevant (if it exists at all) in her methods.
I had much more success recording and listening to simple simple simple affirmations that I would play on my iPod than doing those complex BK mind games --in some ways maybe enraging and confusing even more the unconscious mind.
Again Shawn, do not take it as a critic. I am just trying to expose what worked for me the second time around.

Hi Alix,

I was actually going to write you and say almost the same thing as you, ie Katie works at the conscious level of awareness, while TMS treatment deals primarily with what is taking place in the unconscious which is beyond our everyday awareness. I get that. I am not saying that "The Work" is meant to be a treatment program for TMS or a method to replace Dr. Sarno's work or the work of other TMS practioners, but only a means of achieving mindfulness. And in the midst of intense discomfort this is also very much needed in order to attain a sense of sanity and overall purpose.

BTW, I did not e-mail you after all, I was thinking about someone else.
