Now Steve Trachsel of the NY Mets has lower back problems, had an MRI and is going to see a "specialist" in California.
Strangely, Steve doesn't appear to have a history of TMS injuries -- his first year with the Mets was horrific, including a demotion to the minor leagues, yet he came through it without injury. This year, he should have even less pressure on him since the Mets have really fortified their pitching staff. Perhaps it's something going on in his personal life.
Whatever it is, the back specialists are sure to sideline him for months, and then he'll probably never be the same. Oh well... |

I'm a Giants fan. Barry Bonds has a history of sciatica. During the offseason he had arthroscopic surgery on both knees. I read about a study in which one group of patients had arthroscopic surgery done, and another group was cut into without anything being done. The group that didn't have arthroscopic surgery did better than the group that did have arthrocopic surgery.
I wonder if professional athletes would want to admit to TMS. There seems to be too much of a financial connection. What happens if they acknowledge that it is all psychological, and then they get a really painfull TMS symptom that makes it hard to play? Teammates, press, fans etc. would refer to them as weak minded.
Who knows. Perhaps some day some team doctor will get hip to TMS, have success with his team's members, this news will spread to other teams, and then society as a whole will come to know about TMS through sports. Let's see the non TMS medical community speak their way out of this. |

| thats interesting, i would think many have TMS as they live a life of high pressure--i can't remember how many times i heard about a player sitting out due to back spasms.... |

In 2000,my favorite player, Darin Erstad of the Angels,hit .355 and had career highs in virtually every category(homers,OBP.hits,etc)...the following year he had his worst year ever..his batting avg. fell off 100 pts.!!(.258)
In 2002 after hitting a respectable .283 and playing even better in the post season and winning the world series,they mentioned all his back troubles from the year before
They also mentioned(for the first time) that he had been going through a terrible divorce!! They had never mentioned a thing the whole year he slumped,except for his bad back!!
Having recently(99) recovered myself,it was very frustrating to watch.
...Now I see it happens in the UK...TMS obviously doesn't have a favorite sport!!

Well, it's official. Steve Trachsel is having surgery for his herniated disc.
What a shame... The Mets are losing a solid pitcher who eats up innings for them, due to an injury that is probably not an injury at all... |

OK...Imagine your Trachsel...always been a solid guy,but there is ALWAYS some young hotshot trying to get your job.Now the team goes out and gets arguably the best pitcher of the era...pressure on top and pressure from the bottom.
He was around the whole time the team was supposed to be winning and wasn't.....there all all kinds of pressures we fans could never imagine unless we were sportswriters and hung out in spring training.
he's also 33....a lot of people site 30-33 as the beginning age of the second phase of adulthood:Mission....Jesus was 30 when he started and 33 when he finished.
I had my "last stand" of TMS when I was 33.Did Trachsel have any kids,marriage,divorce in the offseason???? Parents died,ill??
He's 20 games under .500 for his career,but now they HAVE to win...look...they got the 2 biggest fish of the offseason!

Oh yeah to ALBERT....people on steroids who stop taking them always have "problems" adjusting to their new life....look at Mark Prior.He has been a big turd since he quit the juice...perfect mechanics my butt...he's been a slinger since day one...a juiced slinger albeit.
Remember,in HBP Sarno even said that for some reason he couldn't explain,cortisone(steroid) could temporarily banish TMS symptoms.
Giambi hit what? last year?? Prior? Sosa?
Hell,even scott spiezio reported to camp "20 pounds slimmer"....Hmmmm
I used to take steroids for my voice...when I was on them I felt like I could bend the world in half.....when you come off of them you feel depressed,moody and irritable(all logs for the TMS fireplace)

Trachsel plays in NY, which is enough to give anyone TMS, especially a pitcher since pitchers tend to be head cases anyway.
Last yeat Trot Nixon of the Red Sox, my team, missed almost the entire year with a back problem that turned into a butt pain problem. Same thing. Any town with a vicious sports media is stressful to play professional sports in.

You know...I think he's finally getting in tune with the truth.When he blames the press for his problems and says he's "done" ,he's just like a TMSer who has hit bottom.
I,for one,Like Barry....He is just a big kid.He's only been a jerk to the media.....unbeknownst to many,he has always been great with kids and SUPPORTIVE fans.
My son went to a Dodgers/Giants game and came home ecstatic that "Barry Bonds waved at me...."
I asked my son how he was sure it was him and not any of the other people who Bonds was waving at.
He said(in his Giants cap)..."Oh ..it was easy...I was the only one in that whole section who was cheering for him and WASN'T ragging him about stuff"

I am a hitting coach...I have watched and studied the art of hitting a Baseball from every major source,film,book,video,photo's,etc.
I have been trained by pro's from Japan and America.I pick up a baseball bat every day of my life.I watch at-bats from athletes of all levels from every possible vantage point.....you could say I'm a bit obsessed with what makes a baseball go.
Barry Bonds has a PERFECT SWING...Case closed.
I used to use steroids for my voice in the studio when I would have to sing for 10-12 hours.Sometimes I would have a game the next day....I never hit any better,farther etc....if anything they made me a little edgy and tense(not good when you're batting)
Hitting a Baseball is a conditioned response...it takes thousands of hours of training,and if you need to make an adjustment,thousands more to 'reprogram' the muscle memory....you cna recover from TMS in 2-6 weeks...to recover from a hitch in your swing can take 2-6 years!!
Having done all that research,all I can say is that regardless of what he might have done to increase strength,Barry's swing is flawless...never mind the homers...look at his Batting AVG.
Charlie Lau and Walt Hriniak would support my contention.

In my opinion, the most perfect swing in baseball today belongs, not surprisingly, to the best natural hitter in game for my money: Manny Ramirez. I see him every year at Fenway at least 10 times, and he can hit any pitch anywhere in the park and obviously has serious power. He's the best hitter we've had since Ted Williams, hands down. And his game has never been aided by juice of any kind.

| This is what amazes me about Barry. Most hitters tend to make an out after getting to a count of 1-2 or 0-2, but almost every time Barry comes back and the count changes to 3-2. This happens so much you expect it to happen. Of course it helps that they won't challenge him. |
