For what it's worth. I wrote this while i was having a foot massage.
TMS
It lingers & shifts this TMS pain, But would you believe that it starts in the brain?
Our subconscious creates it to protect us it seems, From feelings deep down that it doesn't reveal.
The pain it is real - And yet it is not, A conundrum is this in which we are caught.
Sarno et al say there is a way out, Think psychological & remove all the doubt.
Think what is bothering you, write it all down, Journal & journal till your brain comes around.
Don't fear the pain, don't let it take hold, Go about living and always be bold.
Talk to your brain, shout at it, scold it, Tell it who's in control, don't let it forget it.
Relax & imagine the blood flowing freely, When the pain comes back, reprimand it severely.
It's tricky & cunning & conniving you know, But you have the power & knowledge to let go.
My wish for all here is speedy recovery, A Free body, free mind & new discovery.
Mala
Honestly, I sometimes really get fed up with my subconscious. It's like it's got a mind of its own.

WOW Mala!!!--I'm blown away. I'm no literary critic for the NY Times, but that is really, really good IMHO. You wrote that while having a foot massage?--I wonder what you'd come up with if your were being Rolfed or Tragerd? We need to get Dave to put that into the site's "Biblio/Resources" page--you're the Edna St. Vincent Millay of the TMS Forum. So you're not just another pretty TMS face writhing in agony.

I love it Mala,
we need more humor, as in “many a truth is spoken in jest”. Now we just have to apply this to ourselves. I've never had a foot massage.
Thanks for sharing

*stands in applause* Bravo Mala!! How you beautifully summed up TMS and the cure in a poem! And good for you for pampering yourself with a foot massage, that's how it's done! |

Thx guys. It ain't gonna win any literary awards but it felt good writing it. I have been carrying a little notebook around with me in which I write down a few affirmations & also observations when I need to. Just short sentences. Yesterday as I started my foot massage I just thought of writing something about my day, my pain & the poem happened.
I write poems for people about them on their birthdays, special occasions, read them & give them a copy . It makes for a different kind of present.
Oh Andy you must try a foot massage . It's so decadent. It's probably hard to find one in yr part of the world & they'd be pretty expensive but here in Thailand you get them everywhere. They cost about US $ 10 an hour & that's including tips. We have one every day. They do your feet , shoulders hands & head. Bliss!!

While doing research for the Annual TMS Poetry Awards I found that the Good Doctor's book "HEALING BACK PAIN" can be found in a PDF version on the internet and I'm quoting a page with a TMS poem by past award recipient Edna St. Vincent Millay:
page 78: "Healing Back Pain" Dr. John E. Sarno
"Pity me that the heart is slow to learn What the swift mind beholds at every turn."
"If we substitute the words #147;subconscious mind#148; for #147;heart#148; the point will be clear. The conscious mind is swift; it can grasp and accept things quickly. The subconscious is slow, deliberate, not quick to accept new ideas and change, which is no doubt a very good thing. Were it not so, humans would be very unstable animals. However, at times like these, when we want things to change quickly, we are impatient with the lumbering subconscious. Well, how long does it take for the pain to go? Though I am reluctant to talk about numbers, experience has shown that the majority will have resolution of most of their symptoms in two to six weeks after the lectures. Patients are warned, however, that the time may be prolonged if they count the days or weeks or become discouraged if the pain isn#146;t gone when they think itshould be gone. Human beings are not machines and there are many factors tending to vary the time of resolution. How strong are the repressed emotions? How much fear has the person built up over the years? How readily can he or she repudiate the structural diagnoses with which they came?"
tt Edit: Well that's interesting, it sounded too good to be true, those numbers in the text come up when you copy the page but not in the PDF on the internet, that's how they must keep you from pirating the book. But, if you read between the lines you see what is meant--maybe--you get what you pay for.

TT. Annual TMS Poetry Awards????
Interesting formula though. Strength of repressed emotions ( multiplied by ) fear over the years (divided by) readiness to repudiate the structural diagnosis.
It's clear how & why some of us take longer to heal.
Thx Mala
