Hi, I am feeling a bit discouraged. I can't seem to lick this pain, and I think it is because I still feel a sliver of doubt. Do you all think I need to go see someone, or do you think I can be helped by literatture or phone consults...someone please encourage me...I. did have MRI xrays, bloodwork that shows DDD and annular tear and that is all. Thk u

Stay focused on the goals you have set for yourself. They will propel you through setbacks and times of discouragement.

In my experience, most people who doubt they have TMS after reading the literature still have doubt after they see a TMS doc--although not always. Dr. Sopher told me the physician can on occasion expedite the process from his or her archetypal presence. They can sometimes evoke an unconscious response through their words or mere presence. But they can also inject a nocebo response if the patient doesn't fully believe them, more deeply ingraining doubt.

But there is a reason for the resistance to the TMS literature. And if that reason still exists, then seeing a TMS doc may not help. What is it you want to hear from them that you don't already know deep within yourself?

You're right, if you have a sliver of doubt you won't heal all the way.

If someone told you that you had TMS, do you think you would heal? Or is there a deeper need at-play? I don't know your symptoms, but even your screen name is not helping you. Each time you repeat something it gets more firmly lodged into our unconscious. Alter how you see yourself and your life. Change your mental imagery--as the sage said--"if you stay on the path you are on, you will get where you are headed."

If you're stuck, revise your healing plan. Revise your life and how you see yourself. Healing will occur when the right steps are walked. The problem is that most people are confused and so they walk in darkness hoping for a ray of light. But that light must come from within.

If you have had the proper workup, then it's time to believe in yourself and your abilities. You are far more powerful than you currently believe you are. So you seek outside solutions for internal problems. Become your own healer.

Ok, SteveO, of course you are correct. I could kick myself in the arse for not believing 100%. I bought the Sarno DVD and have just started watching it. I think I need more repetition, repetition, repetition...it's just that this &*%$# pain is interfering with my day. I am going get p-ssed off at it now and give it h-ll. Thank you, SteveO for your candid response.

I can only speak for my own personal experience, but I didn't get a dx from a TMS doc nor did I "believe 100%" the books. I was skeptical, but I thought "what do I have to lose by trying this?" So I tried it for my chronic "sinus headaches" for which I had been taking daily meds for YEARS. Once I started being able to abort headaches on my own through "thinking psychological" etc, after some weeks I felt confident enough to stop the meds and I've never really looked back.

So I believe it is possible to lick pain even if one DOES feel a "sliver of doubt." I hope this is encouraging !

Hi JG,

RSR and SteveO both give you good advice. I would say change your moniker to something positive like "Nerves Of Steel". DDD is pretty much a primordial TMS symptom. There is tons written about it in all the TMS books, audios and videos. Immerse yourself in the TMS materials until you can repeat it chapter and verse. I think seeing a TMS doctor would be good but the problem will be finding one since they are few and far between.

G'luck

Agree with the rest. I also feel compelled to see a TMS doc...but after seeing my own progress, I'm convinced and don't necessarily feel the need as strongly as I did when I first started learning all this stuff. I think the only thing to be garnered from it...if anything...is a possibly "quicker" resolution...but there's no way to prove that...by going or not.

And while I agree that the screen name "jitterygal" can have a negative effect on your mental state, I also want to say I feel that it can have a positive effect ONLY IF that's your screen name because you love to dance and your favorite dance step is the jitter bug...and if that's the case, you should be doing the jitter bug and not focusing on your pain .

Jittery, this point must be clear. It's the most important aspect of healing. You can't heal without full belief. This is the main point of Dr. Sarno and those in his inner circle.

This shouldn't be confused with doubt at the beginning of the healing. No one has full belief when they begin the process. Full belief means "eventually/gradually." You have to get to that point by slowly building confidence over time until that switch in the deeper brain toggles the other way.

If you begin healing, but doubt, the symptom may simply shift to another system or area. If it does, then you really haven't healed. You've just prompted your brain to scan another area of fear. You are still TMSing because you haven't resolved any conflict.

It's such an important aspect of healing that I didn't want people to think they didn't need belief. When slivers remain, so do symptoms. You have to keep making that nexus between symptom and emotion and eventually severing the emotion, or there will be partial relief, or symptom shift.

Slowly erase doubt with persistent thinking patterns. Positive thinking does nothing for healing. Only belief matters.

I have fantastic news!!! I watched Dr. Sarno's video last night and today I have been virtually pain free! I am now 100% confident in my TMS diagnosis. I think I needed Dr. Sarno staring me in the face and saying to me "There is nothing wrong with your back." Thank you to everyone who helped me get here...and Dr. Sarno, THANK YOU.

Oh, and I will be changing my screen name...

That's great to hear. I've been meaning to get those DVDs. But now that I'm seeing Rashbaum, I'll see how that goes first.

I'd like to watch the DVD, too...I'll have to look into it.

And don't forget to let us know who the "new you" is!

Its only human to doubt. What you can do whenever you do have doubt is to do something about it. Read or journal or watch the DVD. Anything will help.

Good Luck & Good Health
