DSM-V note: classification of somatic illnesses to include factitious disorders (inc. Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy) based on presumed shared motivation
In the current formulation, somataform and factitious disorders are to be grouped together because they "all involve presentation of physical symptoms and/or concern about medical illness".

Or as this author argues, "Factitious and somatoform-disorder patients are alike in that they both organize their lives around seeking medical services in spite of having primarily a psychiatric condition."

Conceptually there's a serious logical flaw here, in that factitious disorders by definition cannot be somatic. This could, however, be corrected by a change in the title of the parent group. I'm not sure what category this might be (or how useful) - perhaps, based on the justifications, they are looking for something like a "Sickness Seeking Disorders" group. This would, however, leave several of the other categories out of place, and mis-classify a large number of those with somatic symptoms.
More personally serious to those of us here, is that people suffering with pychophysiologic disorders are essentially to be lumped with those with Munchausen syndrome, as well as Munchausen by proxy. The implications, I believe, in the public sphere could be very damaging. |

No doubt. Sarno is very careful to state that the "very real" pain is not "in the head"...as I understand Munchausen, it's fake...it's not real...it's forced display of symptoms in order to get the attention they need...yeah, that's not a good grouping at all...
