Is there an opinion on whether TMS can impact a persons speech? I don't studder or slur, but get a ton of mouth parathesias. I also find myself finding it hard to get words out sometimes. Not often, but it happens. i saw a neurologist today again and he did a thorough clinical exam and said everything was fine. Just wondering if TMS could be impacting the muscles and or nerves of the mouth in any way.

Sure, TMS can latch onto any part of the body the subconscious decides will be a good distraction from dealing with "unfaceable" (good term from SteveO) emotions.

What do you think your mind is preventing you from saying when you have this symptom? I too experienced times when I struggled with speech. I put it down to migraine, another common TMS symptom. The jobs roles have always required me to communicate effectively. I used to get very stressed over not being able to get my words out. I have even had choking fits while trying to talk at work. The more stressed I became, the more I feared this happening again and again and at the worst possible times. This only fed the beast. Now that I am more aware of why this happens and no longer fear these symptoms, surprise, surprise I hardly ever suffer from speech problems or choking fits anymore.

I do get other symptoms. This brain of mine is very stubborn.

Thank you for the replies. I have had a host of symptoms and as i am reading the divided mind, i see a lot of myself in what Dr Sarno is saying. I struggle to believe that this is psychosomatic for fear that it isn't. However when i read the book, i fit the profile to a T. My wife even read a couple of sections and said, that is written about you.

Hi timmbell,

I have had two types of speech problems that I think are associated with TMS.

The first I remember was tied to the fear of public speaking at the age of 11 and my then very low level of self esteem and self worth. I had one line to say in a play of Richard 2, and I heard my bully brother snickering behind the scenes at me and I forgot what to say with acute embarrassment. I had a similar incident at the age of 17 when in my first job when I refused to answer the phone as I was scared, and did not know what to say. My confidence level in those days was pitifully low, (family issues). Later in my forties, now residing in the USA (away from my family) I conquered this problem by joining Toastmasters for several years. The hardest speech I ever gave was a eulogy to my father in 2005 at his funeral. No one else in my poisonous family would make a speech. I showed them!

SteveO mentioned recently of a championship tennis player that sabotaged the game because they feared making the victory speech. Fascinating don’t you think? I need to order his book, but I’m too busy finding “joy” in the windsurfing season.

The other incident was the onset of slight asthma-allergies at the age of 55. This caused my words to be truncated, especially when speaking over the phone, as I gasped for breath. I read last week in Dr Sarno’s HBP that asthma could be a TMS equivalent. Even though I was assertive and ready for the phone call, possibly old subconscious fears arose without me being aware.

I’m beginning to realize that everything we do might be somehow associated with TMS. It’s all physiological.

Thank you for bringing this question up. Good luck
