Here is how it works.
You get angry. We all do. Some (most?) people have idiot bosses. That is why Dilbert is read by 50,000,000 people world wide. And, we all have relationships.
The problem is that we repressed the anger. We want to keep our jobs or we want to keep peace in the family.
The anger is repressed in the unconscious mind. The anger wants to come to the surface. Dr. Sarno contends that the unconscious mind gives us pain to keep the anger hidden in the unconscious. When we realize this, the pain goes away.
Is he correct? Many people have a problem accepting his diagnosis but many more have gotten rid of their pain by following his instructions. I am one of them.
I read these questions on the forum and wonder if the person has actually read the book. Dr. Sarno recommends that you continually read the book. When finished, read it again. You need to do this over and over to let it sink in. I read it over thirty times. The proofreader only had to read it once and by the time he finished, his back pain was gone. Maybe he paid more attention.
Dr. Sarno’s concept is not easy to accept.
I hear people say, “he thinks that the pain is in my head, he thinks that the pain is not real.” Well, the pain is in your head; all pain is in your head. The pain comes from the nerves in the area of the injury or from wherever area of the body that the unconscious mind selects. Ask any one who has recovered. Yes, the pain is very real, but, above all, it is harmless. If you can believe that the pain is harmless and psychosomatic (mind-body), you are well on your way to being cured.
Do the daily reminders on page 82. Remember them? Those that follow them get cured.
Go to Amazon. Select books. Enter Healing Back Pain. Read some of the 300 five star reviews.

Hi Allen,
I agree with all that you said. I think it is hard to get the information, whan you are focusing on just the cure. I had to read the book Healing Back Pain many many time before "I got it". It was only when my lovely wife read the whole book aloud one weekend that I absorbed the messages in depth.
I saw you on Dr. Sarno's thank you page. I am also there, I am Andy the windsurfer. What a good way to hint to others about "Thank you Dr. Sarno's". Hint, Hint.

I agree, for the most part.
However, I don't think that anger or rage is the only problem emotion. It is perhaps the most prevalent or common, but for many individuals, me particularly, I think other emotional factors, and especially the accumulation of all of life's emotional ups and downs is the key thing.
As for reading the book, I do totally agree. I'm still re-reading all of the books, now 13 or 14 years into the journey, and can tell the periodic reinforcement from time to time is needed and effective, EVEN THOUGH I now have the contents almost memorized. But I would caution against getting too carried away with that, to the point, as Dr Sarno warns, that it just becomes a ritual.

When Dr. Sarno discusses "rage" he refers to unconscious emotion that cannot be felt. This is not the same as conscious anger. There are many reasons why the "pool of unconscious rage" fills up and threatens to overflow. |
