I just learned about TMS and Dr. Sarno on Monday at a documentary screening. The filmmaker is working on a film about chronic pain that features Dr. Sarno and he showed a clip from it. I went out after the documentary was over and bought Healing Back Pain. I'm really excited about what I've read so far.
I've had tendonitis in my wrist to varying degrees for years. Over a month ago, both wrists began to hurt progressively more and more until they were so bad it was hard for me to work (I use a computer most of the day). It got bad enough one week that I decided to take a Friday off to rest them. Thursday night while leaving work to start my weekend early to rest, my upper back started to hurt really badly. So much so that in a couple of days that pain outweighed my wrist pain and I had to lay down on my back several times throughout the day. I was in and out of work, in pain, depressed and crying everyday. I went to the doctor's office twice in a week. I got scheduled for physical therapy for my wrists and back and told to take it easy, take ibuprofen and muscle relaxers and wait. I've had a few physical therapy sessions and I feel much better than I did a few weeks ago, but there still is some pain in my wrists and back and I skipped my weekly dance class out of fear. And if I'm honest, before this latest flare up it was digestion problems and before that it was knee pain.
I'm still learning about TMS and I believe in the mind body connection. Before reading Dr. Sarno's book one of the things that bothered me about PT and the doctor evaluations I've had is that no one asks me about what is going on emotionally. I have a couple physical therapy appointments scheduled this coming week and I think I'm going to cancel them. Im also on Day 3 of the TMS wiki program.
I've already started to be more aware of what I'm feeling instead of allowing myself to push things inside. I even went to dance class this morning and made it through the whole class with minimal pain which I never would have done before reading about TMS and which has given me a boost in this journey to being pain free physically. I look forward to being a part of this online community. Thanks for reading!
