My back has been doing great since I read the Sarno books and joined this forum about 2 months ago. I went for a relaxing massage yesterday and now my back is acting up like it used to. I saw a chiropractor for 15 years and always got a massage prior to manipulation. Yesterday was just a massage at a spa. I feel as if I am regressing in my program. Any thoughts on what this is? Help!

Don't think physical, think emotional. Any stress in your life right now? Any negative events going on? Maybe conditioning? |

Interesting, isn't it? Sounds like conditioning; the massage plugged you back into the old programming: back pain--massage--chiropracter.
I've recently experienced the same thing. I have been going for some massages recently because I had some discount vouchers. But then the therapist's talk about finding "trigger points" that need to be worked out, very tight spots, and all the rest, serve as nocebos. You go in for a "relaxing massage" and you come out temporarily relaxed, but also somewhat buying into this idea of needing more massage. I think the only way to get around it is to either refrain from massages for awhile or absolutely convince yourself they are only for relaxation. |

Guilt or some other emotion, take a look at the lists in the books and I'm sure you'll find a subconscious emotional trigger. Two months is not a long time to decondition your subconscious from 15+ years. You can't get hurt getting a massage, I've even fallen off a massage table with a masseuse on top of me with no ill-effects. I've had nearly a 100 Rolfing sessions, which are really, really deep, with no injuries besides some bruising. WOW, 15 years of chiro-quack-tic preceded by massage! When I think of all the treatments, pills, chi-machines, etc., I've wasted money on I could be driving a Ferrari and getting an all-over massage.

I think you're too focused on your body, as are most of us with these problems. Somewhere in the recesses of your mind you were harboring fears and concerns that the pain would/might start back. I try to act like I don't even have a body; just live totally within my mind.
I know. Easier said than done. But it can be done, to some extent, and I find it makes a world of difference.
Regarding 'relaxing' - that was the ONE BIG thing I learned following my Sarno "breakthrough": It is counterproductive to try to physically relax. A paradox, if you will. Do your relaxing in your mind! The body will then follow suit without conscious or intentional effort on your part.
