For several years, when I feel stress, I get a pain in my chin, right at the end on the side. I remember a few instances of this. Yesterday, before I left work, my boss said something very upsetting to me. This triggered of fear of losing my job, the prospect of forever being uncomfortable around him, just doom and unhappiness. Within one minute, I got a severe stabbing pain in that spot. I have had dental x-rays and it isn't a tooth, no signs of that, no abscess, these things I have had and know the difference.
Why is the tension picking that one spot? I would like to know physiologically what is happening there. I am not clenching my jaw, I was aware of that. Is it a muscle? Why that one weird spot? I took 2 Advils, iced it, used heat, and it took 2 hours to go away. It wasn't constant, intermittent but it hurt so much. I am doing Sarno, Schubiner and hopefully will get a grip on this but what can I say to myself at the time to help the pain go away faster? Any tips would be appreciated and any explanations as to why the body picked that one spot...what is going on in there? Thanks. |

I never heard of that kind of pain by the chin. I suffer from TMJ (just another part of my TMS) where I clench and get pain in my jaw and neck and results in bad headaches. It sounds like maybe it is just another spot where TMS can manifest. I understand your frustration and wanting an answer. I too just want a quick fix for this pain, but it seems fixing my anxiety and thinking patterns is the only way to get rid of this pain, which takes time. I wish there was just a magic pill. I hope you can find some relief from your pain and sorry I cannot be more helpful. I do wear a bite guard for clenching at night because sometimes we don't realize we are even doing it. You may want to try that too.

Hi Susan, I wrote a chapter called Symbolic Attacks (Chapter 12), and why certain body areas were targeted, but we can never know why all of them are targets, the brain is too complex. It could very well be that you were in high tension once and you chewed on something, or tensed your jaw, and your brain remembers that spot forever as a safe haven to go to when you need a ditraction. TMJ can start without any jaw movement, I've seen many people whose TMJ began just sitting with no gnashing. Dr. Sarno is currently doing a TMJ study, but he's already said there may be sympolism but they aren't going after that information. Treat it as TMS if you've had x-rays and stop taking meds and icing it (since there's probably no swelling), and of course don't try to make it go away faster, that only makes it stay longer. The paradox of life and of healing. Good luck |
