Yesterday the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions convened a discussion on "Pain in America: Exploring Challenges to Relief". And Dr Sarno was one of the featured speakers!

Not only that, but towards the end of the discussion Senator Harkin, chair of the session and ranking Democrat from Iowa, told a long personal story about his own experience of healing back pain based on Sarno's work. It seemed that one of his chief motivations for convening the discussion in the first place was for him to cast a spotlight on how important Dr Sarno is.

I recommend watching the video, which is currently available at
http://www.help.senate.gov/hearings/hearing/?id=5906d585-5056-9502-5dd1-1d549d0d88f7
I don't know if it will be archived at the same location - if the link stops working, go to www.help.senate.gov and search for "Pain in America". There are also pdf's of the testimony given, including Dr Sarno's, but I think the whole video is must-watch because of Sen. Harkin's glowing endorsement. (His personal story starts at about 101 minutes in....) It would also be great to show to friends and family who may be Sarno-skeptical but impressed by famous politicos?!?

If you are a US citizen, and especially an Iowa voter, I recommend writing to Senator Harkin's office at http://harkin.senate.gov/contact.cfm to express your thoughts about the session. As a former RSI/TMS sufferer with a 100% recovery thanks to Sarno + Self-Regulation Therapy, I was excited to show my enthusiasm to someone who can potentially make a big difference in terms of visibility!

Thank God!

There's no question, one day Dr Sarno's work will be hailed as one of the single most important advances in the history of human health care. It is sad to think that most of the acknowledgement will be after his life's work is done.

But, as I'm sure Dr Sarno himself would point out, the more important thing is developments such as this senate debate can only serve to spread the word more quickly.

Here is a link to the transcript of Dr. Sarno's statement... http://www.help.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Sarno.pdf ... its a concise, compact summary of what is often found in the introduction to one of his books. There are 4 other transcripts from doctors who testified that are just as interesting, read them all at the first link in the original post above.

Take care, -Stryder

It was refreshing to see this testimony, especially Senator Harkin who clearly "gets it." Hopefully it goes somewhere, and not into the abyss like so much work our government does.

I urge people to send positive comments to the Senator about this hearing. Perhaps if he receives a good response, he will be more inclined to follow through on his promises to fund more research in this area.

Thank you once again for this post. I noticed you came back from 2008 2009 to do this, as I have just read your interesting emails from then. I'm new to the board this week, but not new to the Drs TMS program.

Wow. and wow!

I just happened on this hearing, and watched it today. I am so impressed by Senator Harkin, and his commitment in bringing Dr. Sarno before the senate committee on chronic pain.

Pain research has the potential to go off in dozens of unpromising directions, as the other panelists proved. But there's only one that ever helped me, and I'm also back to this forum after several years to say exactly that.

I just wrote to Senator Harkin to thank him, and to encourage him to keep the focus on TMS. With health care reform going into "prime time" in 2014, this has the potential to save the health care system billions.

And that doesn't even count suffering and lost productivity!
