Here is a quick run down of my symptoms: I have had chronic back and neck pain since my early 20's. I am now 56. I FINALLY got MRI's and the neck one shows three bulging/herniated discs with mild to moderate spinal stenosis. I have instability when bending head back (doctor said more than moderate as the paper work stated). My back has a brake in the L5 with the disc being displaced and tail bone area with birth defect deformed area of tail bone. The pain comes and goes and often in all kinds of areas. I have numbness in my thumb, pointer, and middle finger for short times at night and once in a great while during the day. I have small amount of burning pain in my arm and more often in my shoulder. I also have pain in an ankle I broke, periodic jaw pain, once in a great while dizziness and headaches. I am due to have a nerve conduction study done soon. The neurosurgeon says if the study comes back with a lot of nerve damage he wants to do surgery which would be taking the three discs out and replacing them and fusion. He prescribed PT and said that 70% of his patients have success with it. I just read Dr. Sarno's book and it really resonated with me. I really think that he is right on although once in a great while my mind says it has to be the pain is from spine problems. Either I didn't read Dr. Sarno's book very well or I'm just confused. I don't have a clue how to fix the emotional issues. He doesn't really tell you. I do have to say my pain has decreased quite a bit from just reading the book. I started a journal today but I don't have a clue what to put in it. LOL. My husband says I should go have the conduction study anyway just to see what is says and to hear his recommendations. It is my choice what I want to do. :) Any ideals on what I should do with journaling, the conduction study and or anything else feel free to write. I went to chat on Sat for just a minute. I wanted to chat but had to go. Thanks in advance, Susie in northern NY |

Start with this. Keep coming back to it. Life begins at 56 |

Thanks. :) Can you explain how you get rid of the emotional baggage showing up as pain? Susie |

You never get rid of it in my opinion.
I think putting it into perspective over and over again, by yourself or talking to others, will help your mind categorize it better.
As opposed to something you just can't deal with, and stuff down. |

But know that you will over time, eventually lose the urge to keep putting it into perspective, and by then you should be in a better place. |

Hi susies,
In response to your question about emotional baggage and journalling, have a look at the program on the TMS Wiki.
http://tmswiki.org/page/Structured+Educational+Program
There are plenty of us on both this forum and the wiki who will help see you through your journey to recovery. |

I live at the top of the state and Dr. Sarno lives at the bottom. Husband lost his job months ago. Susie

"Dismissal from work 47": Good for 47 points from the Rahe-Holmes stress list towards filling your TMS subconscious rage reservoir to over-flowing.
Might be worth a trip to the Big Apple to see the Good Doctor himself.

skizzik, I've had pain since my early twenties but I'd say ya with him here ALL the time I'm suffering. LOL.
tennis tom, We are living on $400 a week. I don't want to spend money going on a trip that far.
I'm going through the Structured Educational Program that Bugbear sent the link for. I'm doing pretty well but I know this will help even more. Susie |

I'm enjoying the Structured Educational Program. It is helping a lot. I am 90% pain free. I still have issues with tinnitus and slight pain at the base of my neck but really doing well. I ordered a few more books. :) Thanks for all of your help, Susie |
