Ive had upper nack/trap and back pain for over 6 years.
I KNOW the chronic pain is from stress, repressed anger, etc.
That said, every 6 months or so, I am doing somehting active and I "pull" my neck and have tremendous acute neck pain. This "locks" me in place for about 3-4 days and I have to just wait it out.

My question: is the spasm itself TMS or a result of the tms stress already put on the muscle?
If its the former, how in G-Ds name does someone "talk" themselves out of or "ignore" a debilitating, excruitatingly painful, neck spasm?
If its the latter, how do I stop these spasms from accuring?

Ironically, this last spasm occured on Friday, while I was in the gym jumping rope.

Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, acute neck spasms are TMS. I had them just like you describe. I recognize them as TMS so my body tries other tricks now. Can't quite get to the root.

I went to the doc today who told me my new hip pain was TMS (piriformis). Then on the way home I began having stomach spasms so bad I woulda gone to the ER if I didn't know it was TMS.

The trick, for me, is catching myself in the act of starting the thought loop.

Love is the answer, whatever the question

Katie, congrats on your TMS dx! Was your doc TMS savy or did you wise him/her up in the ways of TMS? Can you share who your doctor is?

Cheers,
tt

Well. he had read a Sarno book long ago, but basically my hip was just sciatica or piriformis syndrome which I know is TMS, and my thumb was tendonitis.

I feared arthritis which is why I went to exclude it. Anything less I consider TMS. His name is Bruce Heller at One Medical Group, who are good because once you join they are cheap.

Go Djoko!

Oh yah, there was a question here that generated this thread. If you want proof positive for the existence of the subconscious, observe how a thread quickly takes off on a tangent totally different then from whence it started--just like our "noisey" minds. Here at the TMS Forum, it doesn't bother me because that's what this is all about after all.

Let's see, back to how the pain returns to the OP's neck? First for my credentials to answer the enquiry; now, I'm not a TMS doc, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Physiologically, what may be occurring is, joints have these things called propreoceptors, which are like "little brains" within the joints, amongst the bursae, (or is it bursi?), and other crap. They send signals to the big brain, upstairs, telling it we have pain here perhaps because we are taking this activity beyond what our joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles are capable of. The message is sent through a electro-chemical pathway, the body's electrical grid called the nervous system.

Polyneuropeptides, (see Dr. Candace Pert), are the chain that forms the "wiring", sending the electro-chemical message to the brain, "we have pain here". This all happens almost instantaneously like a real electrical system, using the cranio-sacral fluid, connecting the grid, up the spine to the brain, and back.

If it's TMS, a gremlin has gotten involved, messing around with the system, using it to it's own devices, as a psychological defense mechanism--a protective device.

As to why this occurs and how to turn it around, I need to have some more coffee first.

This is an old post from Avik, but it applies to me currently, but mine is even more bizarre. I didn't "injure" anything; I simply woke up with a stiff neck two days ago, and while better, it is still there. It's heading in the wrong direction, but I'm wondering how the simple act of sleeping can cause this. I do know that I was very stressed the night before and maybe there is my answer.

Anyone ever wake up with pains you didn't have 8 hours earlier? This often happens to me, eg, shoulders, back, feet...Ridiculous!

Hey wrldtrv, it happened to me too. My back pain started like that 15 years ago. I was in a friend's house in London with my husband & mom. I had been sleeping o this bed foe around a week already when I woke one morning & my back was locked. At the time I thought it was becoz of the matress but the real reason was a problem the day before when my mom said something about my husband.

The same happened with my neck recently. I just woke up & neck & jaw wre stiff. Maybe when you are sleeping, whatever is bothering you is showing up as mention tension. When the muscle is tight it can cause many problems. Has anything happened recently or something from the past bothering you?

Take care
Mala

Honestly, I sometimes really get fed up with my subconscious. It's like it's got a mind of its own.

Hi Mala, neck spasm pretty much gone. I know it had to be stress-related because the same thing happened a couple of times last year with low back, seemingly out of the blue, but stress is always in the background.

I really believe there is something about the unconscious coming out to play when you're asleep. Nearly every morning I awake anxious and depressed to some degree, and worrying about symptoms. By bedtime, these are a distant memory. Almost every day, the same pattern. I think there is something about painful emotions arising during sleep that haven't yet receded by the time I open my eyes.

Oh good news wrldtrv. There is no doubt about the unconscious playing up when we sleep.

My dad was an alcoholic & very abusive to my mom. Luckily he was never bad to me or my sis. In fact he did really love us in his own way. But I remember as a child shouting in my sleep a lot & people around me would say that I would also get angry in my sleep. This happened nearly every night till I got married at 36.

Then it suddenly stopped and within a short period of time I started getting pains.

I think it was good that my rage & frustration were allowed an outlet thu my subconscious. I wish I could do it again.

Maybe talking to yr subconscious before going to bed is a good idea.
