Hi all!!

I know what I am about to ask goes against the main TMS mainstream.

After long time of rest, I have started walking and doing more acitivity.
As you all know, weak muscles get knots easily and this avoids me from being more active.

So far, if I didn't get help getting those knots away I would be paralysed ( low back tension- sciatic- piriformis damage...)

To give you an idea I haven't walked steps for a loooong period in order to avoid piriformis syndrome.
But, without some therapy or stretching... the knots would get worse and worse, isn't this your experience?

Than U all!

L.B. tension, sciatica, piriformis are all TMS! It's not your body that is being paralyzed--NO WAY--it's your mind that has been paralyzed by fear of movement from NOCEBOS given you from probably many sources.

Dr. Sarno disavowed therapy and stretching after his first book, you must do the same. You have been conditioned to believe you need it, but you don't.

Keep reading the books and try to get these negative body thoughts out of your mind. They are all refuted in the books.

By knots do you mean cramps?

The body is strong, you can't damage it by doing something so mundane as walking.

The closest TMS practitioner to you is in England, could you swing a trip to jolly old for a consult, it would probably be well worth it to you for your health in the long run if you could.

Cheers and good luck.

Hello Tom!

I know there are so many prejudices I need to overcome..

I meant contractures when I said knots... And you will wonder how can I be scared only by this but the initial severe pain 4 years ago has created so much FEAR in my brain..

I do not drive, walk long distances.. I wish I could go to the UK but in this state it is hard for me just to think about it..

And regarding the muscle weakness... don't you think I need to work on that before trying to add normal life activities?

I want to believe as all of you recommend.
In fact last night I was having sensations and was able to say to myself: It is fake, it is trying to distract you, it will go away!
It worked.. but this morning I had a severe contracture on my righty umbar..
So... negative thoughts came back...

THANKX X YOUR SUPPORT!!

I hate to talk physical, but what was the initial "injury" trigger? More importantly, what were the concurrent EMOTIONAL life changing stressful events? (For examples look at the Rahe-Holmes list in my sig below.

If it is impossible for you to walk, then work-out in a swimming pool, until you feel confident enough to walk.

If you can't get to England for a consult-dx, call, her name is Gerogia Oldfield. Her contact info may be in the Forums links or certainly can be found by a little googling.

JUST DO IT!

Hello Tom!

In my case it would be difficult to link the first crisis to an emotional cause ( I was playing tennis, on holiday, under a beautiful sunset at the Caribbean).

If I look back, one year before I had changed job, country and finished a relationship.. nothing that I faced as traumatic since I made the decisions looking for my own happiness...

It all started as just a contracture on my lefty lumbar muscle but then got worse and worse until I went on sickness leave.
That was in fact the traumatic period: pain, impotence, frustration...

I am going to contact the therapist you mention.

I would be able to walk and achieve more things but FEAR collapses me..

Thank you so much Tom!

There is a therapist in Spain, Barcelona. It's on the TMS wiki practitioners list. If you can't find it I'll help you later, but gotta' run now to play tennis on some lovely grass courts.

It is important to accept there is no rhyme or reason to TMS symptoms. You do not necessarily go into a "crisis" due to a specific emotional trigger. The symptoms come essentially at random, and are caused by a build-up or overflow of repressed emotion over time. In fact, the symptoms are most likely to mimic real physical problems. Just because you were enjoying a game of tennis in a beautiful setting does not mean that TMS was not involved in that "crisis" even if the pain seems consistent with a common tennis injury.

The fear is the hardest part to eliminate. The fact that you are still considering physical remedies means you have not fully accepted the TMS diagnosis, and you still fear that the problem will not go away, or will get worse, if not treated. You need to work on reconditioning yourself to think differently about the symtpoms, to accept them as based in emotions and not due to structural problems that need to be "fixed."

Thank you all!

Dave, I accept TMS but I consider physical therapy not as a cure or remedy, but as a help " on the way" in order to avoid those current contractures that make me fear and avoid movement.

Previously, when I have forced myself they would get worse and worse so I won't move back and I don't want to get into that circle...
Origin and solution is in the mind... but damage is done in the soft tissue, even if not serious.. when I went for therapy after two years of pain crisis my therapist was amazed with all the damage at a deep fascial levels... it took him months to relief the tissue..I know he got me better but didn't cure me ;-)

I keep reading Sarno's books and journalig. I haven't slept well in the past 2 days and maybe it could be a sign that my inconcious mind feel at risk??

Thank you so much for your support!

Hi Mayita, I was just wonder how did the therapist see the fascial damage? What kind of test did he use to detect those damage? And how did he goes about fixing the damaged fasciae?

Hello Balto!

Not sure if I used the proper words
He uses fascial relief technique and at the beginning he would feel it tactil, but then he used a test to measure the tissue elasticity and the painful areas would look blue.
He did the test before and after the session and the blue areas diminished.

I am just new to TMS and I believe and accept the theory in order to find the root.
But in the way, the muscles and tendons suffer, don't you agree?

Hi Mayita,

Thanks for your email, if you could copy it to here it would be greatly appreciated, making it easier to answer you in a more cogent and coherent manner, thanks!

Dave's description and insight into the ways of the gremlin are the best and most concise. He gave you good advice and I gained new insight from it also. I would advise you to read Dave's archived posts. From your email you are still stuck in the "physical" mindset. This is quite normal, it's the world we live in.

In regards to "damage", if it's psychogenic TMS, then by definition it's benign and caused by slight oxygen deprivation to a muscle, or joint. It's excrusciatingly painful but harmless, like a cramp. I believe the "contractures" you refer to are what we here call "cramps"?

As Dave referred to, the gremlin acts in strange ways and the pain is not directly proportional to how you are feeling at the moment in your conscious. It's cumulative and occurs when your subconscious reservoir of rage overflows and threatens to reveal itself--that's when TMS as a protective defense mechanism kicks in, since it may not be cool to start cursing on a tennis court at a nice resort during the sunset cocktail hour vacation mixer. TMS can be caused when our homeostasis is threatened, our comfort-zone that we have accustomed ourselves to. If you look at the Rahe-Holmes list of stress creating life situations, you will find that situations such as going on vacation, paying off a mortgage and being released from jail can contribute to the TMS reservoir of rage.

So if it's TMS, which we can only speculate on here, your muscles are not being "damaged"--they may be atrophied from not being used, but that can be quickly remedied with a return to using them, probably in a very short period of time like two weeks.

Mayita, I'm assuming the "blue" muscles you referred to were not visibly blue as seen through the surface of your skin, but appeared blue on some heat/blood circulation device, is that so?

It originated from here:

http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6061

I had a contracction in the lower back (like one of those you bend and your back goes out) end of February this year.
Since July I have been fine. I would say I cured myself by reading Sarno to I state of 80 % painfree.
I was certain that I belonged to the 20 & group that need psycho teraphy to get all well, and started that. I went to a Freudean therapist with little success. I simply did not like her or her methods.
Then I remembered Carl Gustav Jung, and found a wonderful Jungian analyst
http://www.telefonica.net/web2/annagassol/Anna%20Gassol%20Eng.html
After 18 sessions with her I have worked through so much oscurness, anger and violence in myself and in my unconsciousness that I am now 97 % TMS free :=))))
Things have happened. I have left my job. I have moved away from my boyfriend. My life is getting back on a track that is tru fro me and I feel so much mor whole and happy.
If you are so lucky to have a Jungian analyst near where you live and are stuck with your pain. Try it! What have you to loose ?
Nikita.

Then I suggest you re-read Dr. Sarno's books and focus on the sections where he explains why physical therapy is counterproductive to recovery from TMS.

Dr. Sarno used to feel the way that you do, that physical therapy "could not hurt" but in fact he was proven wrong by his own patients, so he stopped prescribing it many years ago.

Hello guys,

I had to convince myself and after my last phisiotherapy session, I have decided that it really was the LAST one!

So now I keep reading the books, watching videos, journaling and visiting this marvellous site.

I wish I had heard from TMS and this wiki before...

Best regards!
