The economy is stinks. The politicians are selfish. Unemployment rate is way high and we don't see any light at the end of the tunel yet. Just like the event of 9=11, we are bombarded with bad news, negative news and I'm sure all this have greatly effect the mental condition of all of us. Stress level will stay high and many of us tms "patient" will sure suffered much more then "normal" people. How should we deal with all this?

My thought: Stay away from the television, the newspapers, and don't surf the net looking for news sites. The media's main role is to sell news, shocking news, and negative news tend to attract more attention. So the medias tend to make thing worse than it really is and they are one of the main force that negatively effect the economy and the confidence of the consumers. So stay away from the news. It only depressed you. And really, what can you do about the economy anyway?

If you can not stay away from the news then pay attention at the world news. Famine in Somalia with millions on the verse of starvation. Soldier fighting for their life in Iraq, Afganistan... People got kills all over the world either due to war or natural disasters... We may not be where we want to be but we're sure are in much better conditions than all those people. We are blessed. Even the homeless beggars at the street corner in my town is in better condition than those refugee in Somalia right now.

You should always make sure your finance security are in the best shape you can even in good economy. Have plan A, B, C... Don't wait until disaster strike. But if you're not prepare, you're not in good shape financially... well! so what, just go with the flow, worry and regret don't solve any problems. And remember, you're not alone in this mess. And look at history, we're always get over disaster man made or naturals. Goodtime will come back. Be positive and be prepare for opportunities. Most rich people became rich during the "recovery" period of the economy. So keep an eye out for opportunities. Take classes to prepare for new technology, new industry, new skill... that will be needed to rebuild.

Worry don't solve anything. Be concern, be prepare, but don't worry. Team together with family and friends to get through this difficult period. We don't really need lots of money to be happy. You can find happiness everywhere if you set your mind to it. John D Rockefeller used to be a insomnia, lost all his hair, and suffered greatly from stomach ulcer due to stress and worry while he is the richest man on earth. I saw poor farmers in Thailand, homeless fisherman in the Philippine, poor factory workers in Vietnam making less than $1 dollar a day and still happy. They sleep well, they enjoy dinner and time together with their family and friends after work. I saw an old lady farmer in the highland of Vietnam's sapa one time. She gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen, a toothless smile. She was so positive and so peaceful sitting in her 2 meter square wooden home with no furniture. Now if she can be happy, why can't we? Good time will come. And remember to PRAY.

Goodluck to us all.

That is why people with TMS personalities usually do well in terms of "success" (whatever that means for anyone). Fear => worry => get prepared => success => angry unconscious.

I was in a much better mental state when I was 18 years old and had absolutely nothing. There was nothing to worry about. You can't lose anything. You have nothing to lose. I just have to remember that I still have nothing to lose. Nothing in this world is mine, because I can't take it with me. Someday it will all get left behind.

I think this is the key. It's all about perspective. I don't think you should need to shut yourself away from society to be happy. A need to do that suggests there's something seriously wrong. You can't always control what information you're exposed to or what happens in your personal life, so it's much more effective to learn to come to terms with things as they are. Getting out of destructive habits like worrying, overanalysing, catastrophising etc and practising acceptance of everything, from the economy to getting stuck in bad weather, will allow you to live with a balanced mind, even in the so-called information age.

Yes, but a lot of the time you can. For example, reading here counteracts a huge universal hypnotism about serious "conditions" that we know- or try to know - are bogus.

I remember the day the economy "tanked." Someone I know said, "Ha, ha, where did all the money go? It wasn't real anyway. Has someone poured it into the sea?"

I try to treat the alleged "money problems" the way I treat my alleged "health problems." They are made up, a very brilliant special effect. The Sarno of the money world is "Busting Loose From The Money Game," by Robert Scheinfeld. If you were to take the words "back pain" some one of the TMS books, and substitute it for money, you would have the basic premise. I highly recommend this approach as a way of resolving the anxiety thang.

I am very lucky to live in a country that I am proud of for a myriad of reasons. Right now, everything I've ever held dear about my country is falling away into anarchy.

Everyone has an opinion on what is happening. Unfortunately, I also live in a country that is full of bigots, and fear-mongers, and Daily Mail readers, and racists, and sexists and disillusioned people. I am becoming less proud of everything my country does.

Everyone wants to talk about it. I can't avoid it. Turning a blind eye is impossible. I would like it not to affect me. I don't know how to stop it affecting me. I want to run away and cry 'NIMBY, thank you!'. I am selfish.

I am a very inward person, to my own detriment. My safety was an ethereal thing, that I only considered of in relation to my own madness. Now, it may become a very real thing.

Terrorist attacks happened, but they happened out of my understanding, out of my zone. These things are happening, and it could be my neighbour doing it; it could happen to my friends, my family - it is happening to everything I believed in.

For someone who is so obsessed with perceived safety - this is a nightmare.

Aarrrgh! Daily Mail readers! (I'm an ex-pat Brit, and right now glad of it - the ex part ;-)

Yes, it's very intense what is happening in the UK. I'm heading over there in 2-3 weeks. I know it's hard to avoid the news and the general fear vibe. When I'm in England I notice that the media - albeit the dignified-sounding BBC - dominates the thought-waves in a way I just don't experience here.

Emigration, perhaps?

Sending wishes of love and the all-important sense of safety.

I feel for you, golden_girl. Despite my post above, these events have been hard to put into perspective for so many reasons. Even if it has calmed down, which I'm not at all convinced of yet, I don't think this is something I can forget. Still, you can't allow it to stress you out and cause further pain. The thugs have already done enough damage, so we need to stay strong and let it end here.

Hasn't Fox News become the most watched news network recently? They practically brainwash their viewers. I saw a bit the other day (it's available on Sky) and felt like they were talking to me like an idiot. Everything they say has such a transparent agenda. It makes The Sun look nonpartisan.

I bought a house when I was at uni, for the next 5 years I was very poor. I had nothing and was the happiest time for me.
