Hi all.

Found Sarno in October 2004 after 4 years chronic back, shoulder and foot pain. In 2 months went from doing nothing to running for 20 mins, walking for a couple of hours, doing press ups, riding my bike regularly, sitting in ANY chair. Brilliant. My problem I believe was conditioning and fear of activities such as walking for more than 30 mins sitting in hard seats and driving. The back and foot pain is still there although it is much better. Back has also flared up more over the last 2 weeks, which is a real downer. Having improved so much it is depressing when you take a few steps back.

Having seen 15 different people for my back and the same number for my feet, Sarno's book was certainly an eye opener.

I've also read Fred Amir's "Rapid recovery from back and neck pain" and would highly recommend it. IMHO, Sarno was great with the theory but a little lacking in practice, Amir helps to overcome this.

It's good to read that you have benefited from reading Dr Sarno's work. I found it around a year before you did and the difference it made to my life was phenomonal. Like you my main problem was chronic back pain and like you I consulted professional after professional - all to no avail.

It is a downer to have a relapse - many of us who post here have had the same experience, but as you say yourself it is a few steps back and you'll most likely find that it is short lived. My relapses became fewer, much less severe and shorter lived as time passed.

Conditioning and fear of activity that has taken sometimes years to build up needs a fair bit of attention to overcome in many people, me for one.

Welcome from me too. If it is any consolation I 'cured' myself a year ago and took up sport again for the first time in 5 years BUT I had my first relapse 3 weeks ago, paralysing pain in my back causing me to take a week off work. The good news? I have just been out for a run and, other than feeling unfit, my body is pretty much pain free. I am "available for selection" again for Sunday morning football, and with my team being so poor I should get a game too!

Where in the UK are you based?

Hi Pete.

Mine name's Pete also but Rudy is a long time nickname. Anyway, I digress.

I'm based in sunny Birmingham.

Whilst I have recovered by 50 % since reading the book, my latest relapse has been due to running. I only run a mile and a half and on about the 5th occasion my back felt stiff. I ignored this and continued to run again 3 days later which made my back a lot worse and my knees stiff. It's like a constant battle. Hence I have decided to stop running for a week or so, but don't want to go back to being in fear of physical activity. Maybe I overdid the physical stiff a little.
