So This morning I've woken up with a sty on my top lid. .. a small pimple which kills. .. in the past I have had 8 operations on my eyes due to these stys turning into chalazions... basically puss filled cysts. .. I was always told by the surgeons to apply hot compresses to increase blood flow to encourage the cysts to burst. .. tms lack of blood flow?! I just wondered if anyone has suffered from the same thing?

Not TMS unfortunately. I had one of those chalazions once. Not fun getting it removed.
Not serious, but not fun either. |

I had one last year. It drained on its own but they told me to use a special wipe to clean my lids every day or Johnson's baby shampoo in order to prevent recurrences. Hope your doc told you the same. |

HB and Art... I've wondered the same thing as when I've had chalazions they come on at times of high stress. Having them removed...OUCH!

Hi art. .. can I ask why you've put the chalazations down as not tms? Anything in particular that makes you believe its not?

Because as far as I know stys are an infection of the eyelid. Infections aren't psychosomatic.
Chalazions are cysts in the eyelid caused by inflammation.
Perhaps stress might play a role, but it's a stretch to call these psychosomatic in my opinion.
Since you seem particularly prone, perhaps you can find ways to keep your lids clear of bacteria. Don't know if this would work, but your doctor would. |

I agree with Art. A sty is generally caused by staph. If you get a dental abscess, that is no more TMS than a sty. Hypothetically, we can say everything is caused by stress but an infection is just that and has to be treated. My friend had a pedicure and wound up in the hospital on IV with the worst staph infection (common in nail salons). She is not a stressed out person. Like they say, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. |

I don't know about the eye stuff, but a lot of folks get cold sores and they can be tirggered by emotional stress. The herpes virus lies dormant in the nerve and when triggered moves to where it is exhibited as a cold sore.
Emotional stress can weaken our immune systems to the point that they are overwhelmed and can't fight off stuff. Not everything is TMS but I'd say about 80% is.

Tom, that's so true. If I get shocking news or a severe anxiety moment, so often the tingling starts 2 days later and there is that darn cold sore. I used to get the flickering eyelid during final exams, also the migraine aura, great light show but comes at the worst times. The manifestations of stress...endless. |

I think it's important to make appropriate distinctions between stress related illness and TMS. TMS always has a stress component, but stress related illness is not necessarily TMS. |
