I have had basically every TMS equivalent under the sun and have successfully overcome most of them.
However, in the midst of all the madness that I have been going through over the past year, I have had this on and off sharp pain in my left ear, along with what feels like congestion (there is a slight decrease in hearing; it feels like it needs to "pop" but never does).
So, I went to two ENTs and had all sorts of tests done and low and behold, nothing (altho they do want to stick something deep in my ear for this certain type of test and i dont want to do it!).
My symptoms move around DAILY. From my neck to my sciatica to my jaw and on and on. I was wondering if anyone else has had sharp ear pain for an extended period of time? Im worried only because of fear of long term damage to my ear. Should I go through with this more invasive exam or is this TMS? |

I think I'd be worried, too. Ultimately it's your choice, but personally I think it would be better to go for the exam. Not because I don;t think it can be TMS, even if there's an apparent structural cause, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I had about 5-6 weeks of left ear pain (and a little in the right) along with the sensation of "needing to pop" my ears. I was initially diagnosed as having an ear infection, went through 3 antibiotics and a steroid, and eventually went to an ENT specialist that told me he couldn't find anything wrong and that it couldn't be an ear infection. I had suspected it was a TMS symptom, but it was such a convincing one that I gave the medical route a good try first. Within 2 days of going to the ENT my symptoms were almost completely gone (at that point I became convinced it was psychosomatic, I dealt with it emotionally, and it just fizzled away).
As always, just because it was a TMS symptom for me doesn't mean it is for you too. I can't give you specific advice on what you should do, but I can say that this is well within the realm of TMS. |

I had a loud fluttering in my right ear that started the day after Christmas. My ear began to pop a lot. Then I got a sharp pain in my ear. Then I started to get sharp pain in my left ear. After about two weeks I went to my family doctor. He examined my ears, said everything looked fine, told me I had tinnitus, and said nothing was to be done about it. I went home and within a couple of days it disappeared completely. |
