My current dilemma: I'm trying to explain TMS to my elderly mother who is very intellectually challenged. An idea occured to me. I think Sarno should write a book "TMS for Kids" or something along those lines, where the book would be written in language that is understandable for kids and adults alike who need a really basic, simple explanation of what TMS, maybe with some pictures to go along with it and in a reading comprehension level that would get the basic ideas of TMS across in a very "kid friendly" way. Afterall, kids have TMS too and some adults would benefit from that approach.

even with a 158 i.q. i cant grasp the concept-even though its really "simple" so to speak, unfortunately i think having a high i.q. is part of the picture of tms-high iq=excessive worry/ocd

Hi Mary,

In my opinion this would be terribly difficult. I don't see how a child is going to understand abstract concepts like unconscious rage and the relationship between mind and body, no matter how "simple" one tries to make the presentation.

I think you might have better success shooting for a placebo effect. Kids are highly suggestible and if a parent were reasonably sure that a kid had TMS after ruling out something medical, "sugar pills" might be effective. I don't know if this would work with adults like your mother. I think there's only so far you can go with drawing a mental equivalence between kids and low IQ adults, I know psychologists use language like "mental age" with respect to testing, but I'm not sure you want to be too literal about that.

Hope you don't think I'm being too negative, but I continue to think it's a tall order. I'll say this, your mother's lucky to have you as a daughter...

Thanks for the feedback. Art, I tried sending you an email but it got bounced back. Is your email in your profile current? That's the one I used to use to contact you but I got an undeliverable this time.
